After being shocked that our data usage via our internet provider is at 87% our monthly allotment today with still having 11 days left for the month, I decided to look into our Netflix usage. Lo and behold, someone or more than one persons logged into my account and have been downloading and watching Netflix from an iPhone in Singapore and maybe India, too, as well as using a 'streaming stick'. So I immediately changed the password and did a bit more searching.

This added to the ID theft and cell phone purchases that I was billed for last month, confirmed my suspicions that my data was compromised while using hotel or motel wifi sometime in the past two or three months.

I talked to my brother, the Internet specialist this morning and he shared his expertise in how to handle this and prevent further access to my accounts.

Then I also called Netflix and asked if they would be implementing a system of text message notification when a new device logs into our accounts. Netflix apparently sent me two emails on the 20th of June, telling me of the 2 new logins from an iPhone in Singapore and in India, but I didn't see them because I tend to ignore Netflix emails. They are usually about some new movie, etc. and I just don't want to read those. Now I know I can't ignore anything anymore without taking some sort of risk. Anyway the guy I spoke with told me adding text was being discussed, but it not yet an option.

In the meantime, I am working on following my brother's advice on strengthening our cyber security both at home and while traveling. It'll take awhile, but it shouldn't be too overwhelming.
 
That totally sucks ! Hope they didn't get any banking info or credit card stuff !
I don't use Wifi anywhere but at home for this reason. You just never know :(

That sucks. It seems like everyone gets hit at some point by cyber theft. My debit card info got stolen somehow and used for an expensive hotel somewhere in Russia last week. I should get the funds back but with all the loopholes the banks have with debit card fraud, it remains to be seen. I may be out several hundred dollars. Not too long ago that would have been a pretty devastating loss. Luckily today it won't break me but someone across the globe stealing hundreds of dollars out of your bank account is angering at best in any case.
 
FYI, I think everyone should check their accounts.

I went to my Netflix just to see the log in activity on the list they have.
There was a Streaming Stick, which we do not have but it still listed MA (state). There were also one from MI and CT, not me nor child. And this was months ago, no bank issues back then or now.
Actually she went on a trip with school, the CT may have been her but not MI..
You can "log out of all devices" which I did. Figuring someone just got lucky logging in OR DD gave it to a friend to use and she is not telling me. But I think she would, I gave her the Evil Eye o_O.
I will watch it and see if anyone logs back in.
 
We have had nothing since I changed the password. Before that I had deleted those devices from our account. After changing the password existing devices could not sign in without the new password, so it's looking secure for now.
 
No sooner than I read this thread, I received an email informing me that a "new device" had logged on to my account by computer ( nope, not me ).
Sure enough, I'd been hacked as well.
