I'm wondering if anyone can help me with the process for making this soap.

After reading Catherine Failor's Making Transparent Soap, I would like to try this method. One of the methods outlined is the alcohol/lye method, wherein you add the alcohol at the beginning of the cook along with the melted fats and lye solution.

Miller soap has some excellent tips, recipes etc, particularly Jeff Bobeck's method http://www.millersoap.com/glycerinsoap.html but if you read carefully in the comments someone named Marci said, "I do want to mention something really funny. I went to the link for transparent soap and read all the recipes and formulas. Some were very detailed and some a bit more simplified. I started to go with one recipe with a 4 step process and realized that I added the ingredients in the wrong order. So I just added all the ingredients to the Slow Cooker at once. It was basically a one step process. (#1. Throw everything in the pot. ) So after 30 minutes on low, I had the string like glycerin dripping off the spoon. The soap came out perfect! I could even read 14 point type through 1/4" of it. I wanted to see if I could repeat the process to make sure it wasn't a blessed accident and have made three batches since and they all came out perfectly. So strange and funny - throw everything in the slow cooker, boil 30 minutes, pour, done....."

Another great site gives calculations for those of us who can't get 190 proof ethanol, http://www.bearchele.com/soap/Tutorial.html

So my question is has anyone tried using the alcohol/lye method in the crockpot (rather than the tightly covered double boiler method Failor describes)? What was the outcome? What experiences did or didn't work? Is throwing everything in the crock pot and cooking on low for 30 minutes something that you would be willing to try? The chemistry of it says it SHOULD work, I am just a little hesitant to waste all the ingredients if it doesn't work, and I am not experienced enough to know how to fix it if it goes wrong! And I cannot find any other reference to doing it this way anywhere on the internet. Any help is much appreciated!

p.s. sorry for the long post!

I can't help you with your enquiry, you might have to wait a little longer for an answer, as not everyone comes in here every day. :)

Could you give more details on the recipe. How much ethanol, water, does the lye disolve in water or ethanol etc. From my understanding, if there is water present and a suffient quantity of lye, there will be soap.

The recipe is based on Jeff Bobeck's and modified by bearchele.com for use with 151 proof ethanol:

All amounts are in ounces

Lard 13
Coconut oil 5.4
Castor oil 8.3
Stearic Acid 1

Lye 4
Water 6 (this seems like a huge shortage but it is necessary to subtract the water content in the 151 alcohol)

Solvents: 151 eth 12 oz
Glycerin 2 oz

Sugar Solution 3.7 oz sugar dissolved in 1.1 oz water

These amounts are for a 60/40 solution of soap to solvents, adding more if necessary up to a ratio of 50/50 if needed for transparency.

Ok, I found another reference to using this general method, so I am taking that as encouragement that this should work!

I am planning to give it a try this week, as soon as my (safe!) fragrances arrive from Peak's fabulous sale... I will let you know how it turns out, and if I can figure out how to upload pics I will do that too

seems like a waste of perfectly drinkable Bacardi to me. This recipe looks like saponified biodiesel. Think newbie mistake. The ethyl esters may want to absorb too much water in storage. That is why most bio is made with methanol. Biodiesel is a GREAT solvent. I keep a jar under the sink for emergencies. It should make a hell of a soap!

Success! Mostly...

It worked! I have soap, and it was beautiful when I poured it in individual molds, but then we played around w colors and scents in each individual bar. We may have messed with them a bit too much. Also very humid here and I didn't put them in the fridge to harden which is recommended. They are a little cloudy now but still very pretty. I'm going to refrigerate them overnight before unmolding them tomorrow and we will see how they look then. Still trying for pics.

Did you add alcohol together with lye or after cooking ?

First time I hear about this method and curious about it.

Yes, that's how I did it. I stirred the lye water into the oils as usual, then added the sugar water, the glycerin and the alcohol. Another good stir with the wisk then lid on and let it all cook. Another method is to just HP the soap as usual then add all the solvents after the cook, but that is what I was asking to start with as this way seemed so much easier.
