I'm a pasta person but my lover is a meat & potato person. I'm not usually the one who does the cooking but wanted to make a surprise dinner for this evening. I got a 2.5 lb rump roast and put in into the crock pot on low and covered it with veggies and apple pieces, etc. I also put the fatty side up. It will be in the pot about 7 hours until dinnertime. Then I'm talking to my sister who is a wonderful cook and she asked me if I "seared" the roast in a pan first to lightly brown the outside. I didn't. I'm afraid that we'll be eating delivery pizza for dinner now and my sister isn't around to answer questions now. Did I ruin this? Is it salvageable? I can cook the crap out of pasta but I didn't grow up eating a lot of meat so I would appreciate some guidance. It's been in the crock pot on low for about an hour now.

Nope! Not ruined! I make a ton of roasts (so easy peasy for dinner). Sometimes I sear...most times I don't.

There are benefits to searing...but it's not necessary.

Definitely not ruined :) Searing helps keep the juices in is all, and it's more beneficial for roasts that are to be cooked less than 3-4 hours. Yours will be plenty tender and juicy without searing.

Thanks everyone. I love my sister dearly but sometimes she will throw a monkey wrench into my plans faster than anything. Hopefully, the wife will be pleased when she gets home this evening. It's beginning to smell pretty good. A local restaurant holds classes just for guys that want to learn how to cook. It's never appealed to me before...until now. Go figure.

Oh!!! Roast recipes! (Yes, I have a passion for roasts...) What's your favorite!?!?

Mine...

Roast (or beef cubes)
1 onion chopped
4 carrots chopped
hand full of parsley chopped
2 garlic cloves chopped and smooshed
about 6-8 small red potatos cubed
1-2 cups sliced mushrooms
chicken stock for liquid

I've never seared a roast before  ahh! I always do mine in crock pot on low. I'm sure it will be great!

Now I want roast and veggies!
