Hello everybody,

I want to make a white bar of soap with a new cotton fragrance that I got from ED.

I usually use about 30% OO, CO each, plus castor oil in my soaps. But in order to keep this bar white, I want to use tallow, castor oil and cocoa butter instead of the PO AND OO.

Does 40% CO, 30% tallow, 10% castor, 10% cocoa butter and 10% OO sound like a good formula?

I'm thinking that if I keep the OO ratio low it won't discolour the bar too much..

Thanks for your help!

This bar may be white but to me I would not use it. I put it in soapcal.net

The soap Bar Quality Suggested Range
Hardness 29 - 54
Cleansing 12 - 22
Conditioning 44 - 69
Bubbly 14 - 46
Creamy 16 - 48
Iodine 41 - 70
INS 136 - 165

Your Recipe
hardness-57
cleansing-29- I tend to aim around 14-18
conditioning 38 so very poor conditioning bar
bubbly 38
creamy-37
iodine- 38 too harsh I aim for 60
ins-183
How about trying to add some titanium oxide to your soap to increase the whiteness. Use generic olive oil such a great value by walmart. It is lightest in color or you could use another type of oil like rice bran.

If you are going to use 40% coconut, I would up the superfat to 8-10% help counteract the harshness.

Try 30% CO, 30% tallow, 20% OO (if you're not using pomace or EVOO, then the color should be fine - regular OO castile cures almost pure white for me, very light cream when first made), 10% CB and 10% castor. That will get you to 23 on the cleansing, 45 on conditioning.

lard makes a white bar as well, i would substitute some of the CO for it will lower the cleansing properties and boost the conditoning. i would just omit the
OO and do
Lard 50%
CO% 25%
Castor 12%
Cocoa Butter 8%

Hardness 50
Cleansing 18
Conditioning 44
Bubbly 29
Creamy 43
Iodine 45
INS 166

Thanks VanessaP, i'll try that decreasing the CO and increasing the OO. I just thought more OO would give it a yellowish tint.

I would try the titanium oxide or lard, but I want to use what I already have on hand, which is beef tallow. Thanks :)

So I decided on 20% CO, 40% tallow, 20 OO, 10% castor and 10% cocoa butter which gave me much better numbers.

hardness 48
cleansing 17
conditioning 48
bubbly 26
creamy 41
iodine 49

It's a nice off white/light beige colour now, not as white as i wanted, but i'm glad with how it turned out.

I use CO at 40% with no problems. OO will tint the soap. My formula is 30% lard 40% Co and 30% liquid oil like safflower, almond, soy or whatever I have on hand. It makes a nice white bar that is not harsh and I superfat at 6. It takes a few days to harden too if I add FO to it.

The OO did tint the soap a little, but I noticed that it is now more of an off-white while in the mold. Maybe this is because it didn't gel? Hopefully it will be hard enough to cut tomorrow so I can post pics.

I find gelling makes my soap darker or have a tint. I have some now that did a partial gell and the part that did gell in light tan while the rest is white. Anything with milk or sugar will tint when it goes threw a gel. I am thinking your butter might have helped with the tint too.

Yeah i forgot to mention its generally not a good idea to gell soaps that you want to end up white. I always leave those ones in out on the cold windowsill un insulated for a couple days.
