I tried my first soap experiment today. Technically it’s the second, but since the first was just making laundry soap from a wide-spread, standard recipe, that was a given, so it doesn’t really count.

Here’s the results of Experiment No. 1:

This is the view of the finished project, with the butcher knife for scale. I tried four sizes of scoopers to see what would work. The plain round measure worked best. The mini melon scooper worked second best. The ice cream scoopers broke. Apparently the thing that scoops ice cream out isn’t strong enough to cut through packed powders. Fail.

Here’s the view of the smaller sizes. You can see the broken detail of the failed scoops.

Winner winner chicken dinner! Plain round cylinder scoops, i.e. measuring cups. According to a small food weigher I have in my kitchen, each disc measured to a nearly perfect two ounces with minimal breakage, so I expect these to get better with practice.

I set up a blog, it's not all detailed yet, but it's there. If you would like to read my notes on this experment, click here.

I have used decorative individual guest soap molds, a tea can lid etc to mold my bath fizzines. I have better results than trying to making the round bath bombs.

I love the disc shape the measuring cup made, but they are a bit thick. Fun to make and will try other shapes!

Two days into the bombs, I notice they are cracking and crumbling in places. I don't know if this is because I just left them out to dry or because they have now lost their moisture and are just a touch too dry. Any way to know which might have happened? How about ideas for stabilizers for the formula?
