Hi
Hi Today I tried my first batch of soap. I believe it was the cold process method. I heated the oils till clear, then mixed the lye with water. I had a difficult time getting both the oil and the lye mixture at the same temperature... only used one therometer.
I stirred for over and hour and I never reached trace. I poured the soap into milk carton molds anyway and I will check it in 5 days. Wish me luck. Robin

Hello & welcome Robyn,

What you could do to make sure it's safe is put it into the oven at 200 F and stir it occassionally until it looks like vaseline at which point you can pour it into your molds.

If you choose to leave it do the zap test in a couple of days to see if the lye is gone. (Zap test is where you wet your finger and then rub in on the soap, then put the finger to your tongue. If you get a zap like a 9-volt battery it is lye heavy and not safe to use.

Good luck and keep us informed. One of the best suggestions I ever received was to use a Stick Blender for mixing.

Cheers
Lindy

Congatulations in soap bucketsfull

I am so excited for you.
This is one of the biggy moments in your life.
Savour it.
Note the time and date indelibly in your mind.Lock it in with the fragrance and colour etc. Maybe add a flying pig with the word YES to it. Then when ever you have doupts about trying someting new go back call up the flying pig and all the rest will come flooding back to you.
Tis supreme moment of success and it will give you the mental power for your next quest.

My first batch of soap

Thank you Star Duster for that encouraging e-mail. You are right on the money... this means more to me than making soap. I feel like I accomplished something. Thanks again. Robin
