Are there ways to make a gel-type lotion without using silicone? I'd like to make an eye gel, and possibly an after-shave gel for my husband, but I don't really like silicone. Just looking for ideas! Thanks

Try fermented seaweed as an ingredient. It's colourless and odourless and I always found if added to creams it gave it a very light mousse-like texture and was cooling and soothing to the skin. You can use it in any quantity up to 100%. Many cosmetics suppliers carry the stuff. A little goes a long way. It's often labelled Sea kelp bioferment.

Ooo a new ingredient to learn about! Tell me have you used this in anything else, like an eye serum or a shower gel? Is it a liquid that combines to become thicker or is it in a gelatinous state already?

It's a clear gel made by lacto-fermenting certain types of seaweed, specifically bull kelp. The fermentation releases the nutrient compounds into the gel that can then be applied directly to the skin. This is the 'miracle' ingredient in Creme De La Mer. It can be used in any skin product, I used to just add it to my face creams at the water phase, whisk it with a bamix and perfect light cream voila! It can also be applied neat to the skin as a face mask that you then wash off. In high quantities it does form a film on the skin and dry. But in say 30% in a skin cream or lotion it doesn't. I used it when I went through my Cream De La Mer phase. Now I much prefer to use a balm on my skin and save the seaweed for a facial mask.

I use aloe Vera gel with vodka as my anti-bacterial hand gel.
