Here is the recipe I used

36 grams Grapeseed oil
16.5 grams E-Wax
10 grams Stearic Acid
7 grams Glycerin
2.5 grams Citric Acid
175 grams Distilled Water
.8 grams Germaben II
20 grams Aloe Vera Juice
10 drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil
12 drops Rosemary Essential Oil
3 drops Sage & Citrus Fragrant Oil
5 drops Lemon Fragrant Oil
2 drops Bergamot Essential Oil

It makes such a soft lotion, with such a refreshing scent. I love it. I have been toiling around for a while, but I couldn't make get it right - all the recipes I had were so harsh and greasy and just a plain mess. This one looks right, feels great, and smells lovely!

Question about the Bergamot and Rosemary EO

I heard that Rosemary and Bergamot EO aren't good for pregnant or nursing woman, and shouldn't be used when in the sun for long periods. Would that still be true when using them in these small amounts? Or is this ok?

Ain't success grand?!? It sounds lovely.

Good point about the bergamot - it's a photosensitizer and caution should be used with applying it and then being in the sun. I'm sure dose level is a part of it, but even at low levels (hard to calculate the %) I'd use caution http://www.newdirectionsaromatics.com/b ... p-184.html

NDA does have a Bergaptene-free version of the FO.

And yes, Rosemary is contraindicated during pregnancy: http://www.newdirectionsaromatics.com/s ... p-338.html

Not to get on my soap box, but this is a good example of why sometimes FOs are a safer bet.

Can't say whether or not the lotion is "safe" - I'd not expect a touch of rosemary EO to cause a miscarriage myself, but who can say for sure. I can tell you I grew it in my garden when I was pg, and fondled, cut, and cooked with it.. I take the bergamot thing quite seriously though, and avoid citrus EOs in leave on products unless I can be assured they won't cause photosensitivity.

It sounds like a lovely lotion to me! You could put a caution on your label. "Do not use if pregnant" or something similar. I am an aromatherapist and I don't believe that small an amount of rosemary would cause any problems......but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Rosemary leaves are different. EO's are highly concentrated and volatile.

I always use bergaptene-free bergamot.

Sage Advice. I have lupus and NEVER use Citrus based EOs in leave ons for exactly that reason. I love them in soap, but won't risk it in lotions and balms.
