As was pointed out in another thread, saying x cups of oils and y cups of lye can be "safe" but far from ideal. Water as % of oils works for making soaps, but the two other options can often allow more control.ETA - a lot of the "big soapers" are also of course aiming at the larger audience, so need to use something (dare I say) basic that everyone can grasp.
