Lye...food grade or tech grade

I've always used tech grade lye with my soaps and recently I've been reading about a lot of people using food grade. Am I missing something here?? :?:

I have both food and tech grade (thought I might be missing something, too :wink: ), but actually, I've found no discernable difference in my soaps made with food grade as compared to my soaps made with tech grade. The next time I need to buy lye I'm sticking to the tech as it is less expensive.

Thanks..! I may try the food grade on a small batch but stick with the tech grade overall too.

I think they are basically the same thing, food grade may go through a bit of extra refining to absolutely ensure there are no contaminants... other than that theyre pretty much the same

I've tried both and haven't noticed any difference. I now buy whichever one is cheaper.
