I've been using the same lotion recipe for the last two years and for the first time it has separated! The only thing I did differently was use new fragrances that i ordered by request of my mom (jasmine, lilac, bamboo).

Do you think fragrances can lend to separation of lotions? I can see a small layer at the bottom of the bottles that looks like water and when I try to shake it up, the lotion seems very liquidy. I have read some stuff that once a lotion fails like this, there really isn't any saving. Bummer!

I felt awful that when my mom said that when she tried to use her lotion that clear watery liquid came out and not lotion! :(

I've not yet had a lotion separate (cross fingers) and I used lots of different fragrance oils. (I regularly make batches, divide them up and put a different FO in each one.)

I can't recall hearing anyone else's lotion separating (provided the lotion was made in the "right" way in the first place) just because of a fragrance oil either.

So I'm thinking perhaps the lotion is unstable ibefore you added the cool down phase either due to the method and/or ingredients. Can you let us know your recipe in % and how exactly you made your lotion ie did you make the lotion following the stages given by Swift in page 2 and 3 of this tutorial?

I use bamboo all the time, and I just made some lilac, cant say yet if there is a problem with that one, its only 3 days old. Nothing has ever separated on me either.

I've heard that it could be possible. I think it was on Swiftcraftmonkey's blog, about how the fragrance oil could be possibly too much for the emulsion and cause separation.

I also read on Swift's blog about it but didn't know if any one had encountered it before. I made the lotion 2 weeks ago and I think this is gonna be a fail :( I'll try again. I really want these fragrances!

The only other thing I can think of is that I messed up in the cool down phase. The baby woke up from his nap and I had to tend to him while I was in the middle of production.

As I said before, it's the first time in 2 years that I've ever encountered this while making lotion. The recipe isn't unstable. And all the ingredients were brand new. Other than the baby, the fragrances were new for me. Thanks!
