Hello Group,
So I have decided to try liquid soap a try. :0) I have researched how to make the soap, and have a recipe I have found online and have input the number in lye calculator, using KOH and coming up with different numbers, Can someone just double check for me to see that I am right/wrong :0) superfat at 1%

Online Recipe
20 ounce oil batch

14 ounces olive oil
4 ounces coconut oil
2 ounces castor oil
4 ounces glycerin

4.27 ounces KOH
8 ounces, distilled water

The recipe online says 12 ounces of water(12 ounces liquid needed, the other 4 is the glycerin added to oils)

My Calculations
The input i put in lye calculator tells me the water needed would be 12.80, so if i used glycerin i would subtract the 4 ounces of glycerin from water , leaving me with 8.80. Just wondering if this is correct/wrong and could someone help me clarify,

Thank you
Sally

Hi Sallyane, I'm no liquid soap guru but here's my belated thoughts. Hope they're still useful.

The amount of water is somewhat discretionary, so I would not fret about the difference between the 12 oz you saw in the original recipe and the 12.8 oz the soap calc gave you. It appears you used a 3:1 water to KOH ratio, which is commonly used by liquid soapmakers. So I think you are fine with that. The other recipe likely used a different method of computing water, or may have been customized based on preference or experience. It would be fine too, as the goal for most is to keep the ratio between 2:1 and 3:1.

How did it go?
