Greetings! I'm getting ready to present my handblended natural skin care line to a fitness center and health food store in NJ. The product samples are made, the business plan is almost complete, menu is done. I was wondering if anyone knew of any reliable and affordable resources for manufacturer's liability insurance. Actually, any advice about starting up would be greatly appreciated. For example; offering wholesale pricing vs. a consignment arrangement and how to present to potential investors (especially because insurance seems to be so high. ) Thank you!

Not sure that I will be a lot of help but here are a couple of things I have read about.

First of all you will need the liability insurance as you were talking about. I have read on another forum that you could use RLI or the Soap Guild. I have heard about a lot of people using the Guild.

Another thing you need to have are the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Incredients (INCI for short) names on the labels if you don't already. INCI names are the second names of each ingredients that must be listed on the label. FNWL has a pretty good list of them here http://www.fromnaturewithlove.com/resources/inci.asp.

Also if you are planning to sell something like lotion you may want to have it tested at a lab to be sure that your formula and preservative will stay good and not grow bacteria and/or yeast...and other things I am not sure of. I have seen a test for a pretty good price but couldn't find the web page before I posted this...sorry. If I find it again I will post it.

Finally be sure to do a lot of reading. Especially in the General Business Forum section of this site. A whole host of information there!

Well that is about all I have. Maybe someone else will have something else to add. Take care and good luck with your new venture!

There's a lot of choice when it comes to insurances; shop around at different companies. You can even try to haggle since even big companies might be willing to negotiate their prices in these economical times.
There are several interesting topics about wholesale and consignment, so please use the search funtion. Also you can browse the General Business section and read tons of usefull information you probably never even thought of. (*edit- sorry Asil, did'nt notice you already sad that!*)

I believe there are 9 editions available for use when lableing soaps and such and you only have to use the second name of an ingredient if you are going to sell it out of the USA. this according to my HOW TO MAKE LOTIONS booklet from BRAMBLEBERRY. :)
