How can I prevent lavender buds from "burning" when I add them to my home made soap? I add them right at the last minute just before pouring into moulds and they turn brown and also turn the soap brown

Are you making CP or HP soap?

I add them to the top as decoration instead of mixing in. I would expect they turn brown because the heat that occurs during saponification.

I've used them fine in MP, they've never made the soap brown. But CP would probably be really different.

Lavender buds always turn brown in CP. There's nothing you can do to prevent it.

I agree with MeadowHillFarmCT about just using them on top as decoration.

yes, they will always turn brown in cp soap, and will resemble mouse turds :) in a rustic-looking soap they can be appealing though.

i too use them for decoration on top, they're beautiful and fragrant.

Always turn brown. Using them in the tub they look like floating dead bugs, lol. But I get the comment from family about mouse turds. So they go on top for me too. I put a pretty purple swirl in the soap to make up for it!

Yup, definately look like mouse turds. But ya know? I actually like them anyways. Everyone says that my poppyseed soap looks like frog eggs, so what the heck, might as well add mouse turd soap to my line too!

"Mouse Turds" and "Frog Eggs" sound like great names for Halloween soaps. (Hey! If Relle can start talking about Christmas, I can start talking about Halloween.)

eta: I just noticed this thread is in the B&B section. I'm moving it to the CP section.

Try coating them in vitamin E before adding them to the soap and then don't let your soap gel. I have found while they still discolour they don't look black and still resemble lavender... On saying that my last batch gelled and doesn't look the prettiest but boy does it smell good. :)
