I would like to know how you store your oils. I am ordering 7-pound buckets of CO & PO, and have an extra refrigerator in my garage. I have to order more every 3 or 4 months. I would like to buy in larger quantities, but I live in an area of HOT summers. I wouldn't want two 55-gallon drums to go rancid on me. I'm not sure I would use that much up fast enough, but it is so much more reasonable- What are you all doing?

I buy my coconut and palm oils in 19 kg quantities. When I get it I unwrap it (it's usually a giant cube that's been pressure sealed) and dump it into a large plastic tote with a lid. I keep it covered and scoop it out as I need it. I had my first load in the totes for 8 months and they never went rancid. I still have some of my first soaps I made with it too and they don't have DOS, so I'm thinking that's an okay way to store it.

As for the liquid oils, I don't buy them in large quantities because in my case, I can actually get them cheaper at the grocery store! So, I never have them sitting around for long. I buy a couple of bottles of each, make up a bunch of bases and use them up in about a week.

I think as long as you are using your liquid oils up fairly quickly you don't need to worry about refridgerating them. The only time I would think they'd go bad is if you had them sitting around for a very long time. I think in your case, with it being so hot where you live, and the fact that you'll be opening them regularly, I would probably put them in the fridge just to be safe.

I store my 40 pound blocks in the freezer and chip off a bucket full as I need it.I also keep other oils in the freezer , my hemp and sweet almond , evening primrose and macadamia .The hemp doesn't freeze and the rest are fine. I don't want to risk them going rancid , I don't make a ton of soap. I will soon have a fridge for my soap oils and will store my liquid oils in there. Just to be safe .

Maybe I will try ordering a larger quantity. That would be a good reason to make more soap!

I have noticed that sometimes I will assume a small bottle is old, because it smells rancid when I remove the cap and sniff. But, if I pour some into a container and sniff again, it's o.k. The threads of the cap catch a small amount of oil from the last use, and this thin layer goes bad. I'm afraid I have thrown out some perfectly good oils early on. Live & learn :)
