Today I made my first lip balms.

Was melting the oils and wax in a double boiler and then transferring the liquid into a heated pyrex jug to poor into pots.

I made 3 batches, on the 3rd batch I took the boiler off the stove and placed the jug in the water to warm it, (had done this 2 times previous), I moved to my other bench and BANG the jug exploded with shards of glass flying through the kitchen!
Thank my lucky stars I wasnt close enough to be hit, could have done some serious damage.

Lesson well and truely learned!

I'm glad you're ok. If you want to use a container for your double boiler, try the wax pot that candle makers use for their melted wax.

thanks soapbuddy I will look into that

I know bakingnana thats exactly what I thought. At first I thought it had just smashed like safety glass, but on closer inspection there were shards everywhere.

I thought Pyrex was suppose to take really high temps.
If it's a gradual temp increase. If you take room temp pyrex and put it into boiling water, it can explode.
Plus Pyrex ain't what it used to be.

That's true. If your pyrex has a greenish tint, it's no longer a true pyrex. It just has the same name.

From what I've been reading it is extremes in temperature, even if that is just cold air hitting a dish that is over 300* F it can explode. But yeah they have changed the recipe here in North America, the ones in Britain are still being made using the original ingredients.

ETA - I'm really glad you're okay....

You'll probably be finding shards for months to come....happened to me once too...can't go bare feet in the kitchen anymore!

I'm very glad you didn't get hurt. I learned about pyrex and extremes in temperature when I first got married (long time ago now).
