I'm going to make some body butter.I have brandnew jars, do I have to wash them out first with hot water, or are they clean already, the way I bought them??

Great question, and one I wondered about too. Are rubbing alcohol or bleach solution used for just plastic jars?

Your packaging should be sterile direct from the manufacturer. By introducing water you are actually introducing bacteria into the sterile environment. If the jars are dirty, dusty, or opened you might want to sanitize. Otherwise do not introduce any water-based cleaner to the environment.

Mine come to me all in an unsealed plastic bag. Hence, I sanitize :D I would imagine if they were in sealed packaging, they should be sterile.

That is good to know, thanks!!

I order some of my jars from Wholesale Supply Plus and after reading this thread I was wondering that myself so I contacted them. They said that they do not come sterilized and I should run them under hot (not boiling) water and dry, that's it. Hope that helps!

LOL. how is HOT water going to do anything beyond getting them wet?

would running them through the dishwasher and heat drying be a bad idea or a good one then?

Melharma - that is incorrect and I am very suprised they gave you this advice. I see it as very reckless on their part.

Earthchild gave great advice.

Unless you actually sterilize the containers yourself, as soon as you take any container out of it's packaging it will no longer be sterilized. Our houses are not sterile. The best that you can do is sanitize. With that said, my containers come sealed and clean from my wholesaler and they are used as is. Water would introduce any germs and bacteria into your bottle and I'm not willing to take that chance.
