Hi everyone,

I started to buy all this soaping stuff and then started to make soap... THEN read about insurance.

Is insurance and forming an LLC and stuff absolutely necessary if I plan on selling on etsy and maybe local non-profit places?

I'm in NY if it matters.

Thanks!

insurance - depends on whether or not you want to leave yourself open to having to pay out of pocket if you are sued... your choice.

what type of company you choose to start will depend on your exact situation - I'd suggest an attorney to advise you.

It is possible to have insurance, but not start a full fledged company?

Yes absolutely you can have insurance without forming a company. I am a sole proprietorship and I got insurance. Since you are in the States I would recommend that you check out the Soapmakers Guild as their US membership carries some insurance I understand? Because I don't know insurance costs in the US I can't comment on the cost....

i would like to sell some at small craft sales, do i need ins, how much does it cost? im in mn.

Some farmer's markets carry a blanket policy that may or may not cover you. I would recommend that you check with them. If their policy won't cover you perhaps you could deal with their insurance. I don't know the costs in the US but I'm sure there are others here that can tell you. You can also look into the Handmade Soap Makers Guild (http://www.soapguild.org/industry/membership.php) - the membership in the US includes liability insurance.

I hope that helps.

Cheers
Lindy
