If you make salt bars would you look at my recipe, please?

I am ready to try salt bars, but soap calc numbers are scaring me (cleansing 69- Yikes!). How does this recipe look to you?

Coconut oil (92) 26 oz.
Water (35%) 9.1 oz.
Lye 3.8 oz.
Salt 20 oz.
Superfat at 20%

Does this look about right or am I way off somehow?

Oh IrishLass thank you so much. I am summoning up enough courage to try salt bars this weekend. Thank you also for responding to my previous post on resizing for a salt bar. I found an earlier post by Paul - Soapmaker Man who explained the 80/80 rule. I believe I finally have my proportions figured out, thanks to everyone's kind advice.

Let me know how you make out! I tried a batch this week and COULD NOT cut them.... when I tried to they crumbled. My recipe was:

Coconut Oil: 12oz.
Crisco new w/ Palm: 4oz.
Superfat: 10%
Water % = 30%

Hmm... as I type this I wonder if a 30% water % was not enough.

Yeah, good point, be sure to keep an eye on salt bars (or any really high coconut bar) because if you don't use individual molds, you need to cut really quickly... sometimes within 1-2 hours. You have to cut while still warm, usually. I did HP salt bars that I had to cut immediately, 5 minutes was even too long.

A-HA! Thanks for that pointer.... I waited the normal time I do for all my soaps before I cut them. I was going to cross them off my list but I will try them again....cutting right away!
 
What types of salt can be used? I remember someone saying dead sea salt weeped. Is that true for all sea salt?

I use regular sea salt with no problems (not Dead Sea salt). Dead Sea salt has a much different mineral profile than regular sea salt and that's why it acts adversely in salt soap. You can use regular table salt, too. The salts to stay away from are Dead Sea salt and Epsom Salts.

I use regular table salt, as due to it being so fine, it works as a gentle exfoliant.

I use silicon muffin moulds to make salt soap, as I don't like having to 'watch' my soap. Think one of my early salt soaps was ready for cutting in under four hours ... and it was still warm.
 
I cut mine while they are still hot . They do set up quick. I have found that washing each bar after about two weeks of curing makes them nice and smooth and shiny.
