I know I read someone talk about it, but I'm just not entering the right search words or something. I have 8 pounds of *gritty* shea butter, and I know there is a way to fix that - something like melt to 160degrees, hold that temp for 20 minutes, then straight to freezer..... something like that. Can someone who's done it before tell me how to get the grit out without ruining anything?

hi
i searched a little;
melt it very slowly au bain marie
the melting point of unrefined shea is about 85f
the melting point of unrefined shea is between 93f and 107f
keep a little above the melting point, for 20 minutes.
let it cool down

:wink: or use it all in your soap :lol:

Try melting it and then putting in a shallow container in the freezer until solid. This has worked for me.

Well, I made a big mistake, but didn't seem to have a bad effect. I heated it very slowly in a makeshift double boiler, took about 20 minutes to get from 100 to 170 degrees. I let it sit at 170 - 175 for a few minutes, then put in in tupperware and put in freezer. After about an hour or so I checked on it, and it wasn't completely solid yet. I figured ten more minutes in freezer then let it finish hardening at room temperature. BUT, I went to bed instead and forgot it, so when I woke up this morning I put it in the microwave to sit. Now I got home from work and looked at it - it's *perfect*, I'm so happy. I love this board and all the great help I get :D TY
