this is got some of my grandpas barber tools in it but I don't like it. I need some help from you guys--if I get it right it could be the back drop for other soaps of mine. maybe a bigger towel that is kinda draped in the basin? and in a different location

20190519_220635.jpg ok used a bigger towel, but I was thinking on the same line as you msunderstood. will have to try that tomorrow

Maybe try less towel in the basin - draped over one side rather than front to back. Try one soap, or stacking the three one in front of the other so that one whole bar is seen, with the tops of the others showing behind it. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it well. Try putting the tool off to the side - off the towel, or just a part of the tool on the towel. Try with no tool. Get your surrounding background as plain as you can - how would it look sitting the basin in a sink or a counter top? I like the chip in the basin. Lots of options.

And pretty soap!

thanks, good ideas--I probably will wind up losing the tools. I would love to figure out a way to get them to fit though. and I like your towel idea. hopefully it will warm up tomorrow--I was thinking of trying it outside too--and yes I understand what you are saying about the soaps. have some work to do tomorrow!!!

devil's advocate.... I know you like the old look, but many do not. If they were Shiny and look new it would be better. Better in the basin and nothing else near it (no greenery).
Also unless this is Shaving soap, I wouldn't use the barber items. It makes people think it is shaving soap.

Yes, too busy.

In your second photo, I like the peachy colored wall, but not the clay pots and not the floor. And that's just the background behind the main subject. The towels in both photos are too big & have too much texture, drawing the eye away from your soap. The shaving tools draw the eye away from the soap as well. Even the basin draws the eye away from the soap. Altogether way too much is going on in your photos. And in the first photo there is too much shadow caused by the depth of the basin. Also in both photos the soap colors are competing with too many other colors from the other items, particularly the towels, if you were to crop these down to clear close-ups.

How to correct it? Remove the tools, use lighting that produces less shadow, remove the towels, remove the clay pots. Maybe remove the plants. But whatever you choose to keep, make sure they don't take away from the soap. Perhaps a plain rolled up wash cloth, and just keep the basin for a simple reflective white backdrop. Or if you can't eliminate the shadows within the basin, perhaps a folded plain white towel inside the basin underneath the soap to elevate it to eliminate those shadows caused by the taller sides. Or move to a location with more natural light.

all good ideas thanks!! now I wished I was making shaving soap haha. the cropping does look better but I agree, the tools need to go. and I was thinking a white towel would work better. and the sun is out here so I might try and take it outside for some natural lighting--I wished I still had my good cameras so I could blur out the back ground. I appreciate your honesty--its the best. sometimes my close friends wont tell me the real truth :) my youngest son did manage to tell me it was weird but didn't want to say anymore--not cuz I was upset about it, cuz he didn't want to hurt my feelings. well need my coffee and then will try again

I really like those wash basins but I think its way too big unless.you can find a simple, clean way to fill it up.
I found this pic, bath accessories in plain colors help fill empty space.
Personally, I would find a smaller basket/tub, get closer and take the pic from the front instead of from above.

Oh - I thought it WAS shave soap! So yeah - don't use the shaving stuff. Are you using a phone presently? Is it an iPhone? You can play with aperture on an iPhone by standing back a bit from the the product (which you already are) touching the screen with two fingers and 'opening' them to enlarge the shot. Then touch on the item you want in focus. the rest of the stuff in the background will be more blurry.
Put your soap in front, and put your items ( love the enamel bowl) behind (further away from the camera). you should just see a suggestion of other items so they need to be out of focus.

I use a galaxy phone camera and will have to check into any features that are on the camera, thanks Kiwi. I was thinking some towels or washcloths in the bowl and the soaps in front--I am making soap today though. but I need to step up my game on the photography
