After weeks of researching, all of my ingredients finally came in today and I just finished making my first batch of soap!

My coconut oil is still on order, so I just used 40% olive oil, 40% palm oil, and 20% canola oil. How does that sound? I made a 2 lb batch and soap calc told me to use 12.2oz of water and 4.2oz of lye.

What do you think of that recipe? I was impatient and couldn't find any recipes that had the oils I had on hand, so I went straight to soapcalc and decided to "wing it". Might not have been the smartest idea for a first batch.... but I'll let you guys tell me how it sounds.

I also used 2 tsp. each of vanilla fragrance oil and cinnamon fragrance oil. I even took some of the soap just before pouring into the mold and mixed it with about 2 tsp. of cinnamon, and did a swirl! It looks like it worked. I guess I'll find out tomorrow!

Anyway, just thought I would post as I'm super excited, and I'm really curious how that recipe sounds. I hope my soap turns out! It traced easy and LOOKS perfect, but who knows what it'll look like tomorrow!

first batch

congrats!

it sounds great! patience was never a virtue with me either. i like the vanilla/cinnamon for fragrancing. i have yet to find the courage to swirl.

once you start soaping it gets to be a lovely obsession!

Congratulations. You should have a nice bar that will eventually be hard as a rock with a low creamy lather. Nice conditioning soap.

Canola doesn't always have the longest shelf life, but in a small batch I've never had problems. Just use it up quickly! :)

Congrats on your fist batch and on making successful swirls. :D

On my first batch, I didn't have palm oil around and made one using coconut oil, olive oil, safflower oil, and canola oil.....

Probably too much soft oils for my batch, but it turned out pretty good.

So I think your bar will turn out just fine.

Congrats :) It will turn out just fine; when I started I only made pure castille. You'll find that as you learn the process better, the possibilities are endless as far as oils .. and different people like different things. If it works for you, then go with it !!

Congrats! I love the smell of vanilla and cinnamon. I think the best way to learn is to jump right in! That's awesome with the whole swirly thing! I didn't try that for a couple years after I made my first batch.

A word of caution - be extremely careful with the cinnamon. It can cause great discomfort and even burns to ... umm, delicate areas.

If you are not going to weigh out your FO's and EO's may I suggest that you use the fragrance calc on MMS. Their calc can give you a little insight in how much scent to use.
