Hyaluronic acid

What would hyaluronic acid be added for in cosmetics (such as lotion)?

I know it is sometimes used as an injectable but why would someone use it in a topical product. What effect does it have?

I think HA would be a bit expensive for a lotion but you can use it in a serum. It works as a humectant and can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
