Has anyone ever sold their soap wholesale or put them in a store. I have an opportunity with a shop in town and don't know how much I should charge them or how to set up an account. Is there anyone who has a suggestion?

The national standard for wholesale is 50% off suggested retail. I have worked as a buyer at the World Trade Center in Dallas, and 95% of buyers will not even look at a line if it is not offered at 50% off wholesale.

If you are placing them on consignment you have to work out a %. I own a consignment gallery & retain 30% of the sale price & pay the artist/crafter 70% of the sale price. When I used to place my items on consignment in shops I would not do it if the shop wanted more than 30% on consignemtn sales. I have LOTS of shops approach me now offering me 40/60 or 50/50 to consign in their shops, but if they want that high of a cut they need to purchase straight out wholesale in my opinion.

When they purchas wholesale the shop takes the risk, they are stuck w/ the product at their loss if it does not sell so you offer them the higher profit rate of 50%. If you consign the product goes back to you if it does not sell or gets damaged so you make the higher profit rate for taking the risk.

You will have to decide on a wholsale minimum they will have to order to make it worth your time EX) 4 bars per fragrance w/ a $100.00 minimum on 1st orders & a $50.00 minimum on repeat orders.

Hope this helps.

WOW!! I am sooooo new to this. The shop owner said it she'd try it and see. I sold it to her and 25% of the retail price. OOPS! Okay then I need to re-address/re-think my approach.

Thanks for the info Tabitha.

25% of the retail price? She must feel like a THIEF! I can't imagine she won't buy from you again. She will make killer profits off of those soaps. If she does contact you, you can tell her the pricing she received was only an introductory offer for new clients, and that reorders are 50% of retail.

Even so, at 25% of retail, your at least breaking even, if not making a little profit, right?

25% of retail should be your cost to make the soap.

If it cost $1.25 to make soap the standard is to multiply by 4 and sell the bar at $5.00 ($1.25 x 4), so 25% of retail is $1.25 ($5.00 minus 75%).
