Hi Jessrof! The maximum usage is for your total oil weight. For example, if all your oils weigh 20 ounces. The lye solution is not included in this calculation for the lye is the reactant and the water is the solvent-carrier which eventually evaporates. What is always constant is the weight of the oils - which eventually changes to a salt due to the lye reaction. So, for your example of 20 ounces you multiple this by the maximum 5% and the total is an even 1 ounce. (20 ounces X 5% {or 0.05} = 1.0 ounce )

Sometimes your amount of FO's does not come out perfectly even. You can always drop the amount down to an easier measurement depending upon your scale.
