Hi everyone! I have been lurking around for a coupe of months now and finally got upl the nerve to post. I work as a nail tech in a small town and have always been interested in making bath and body products. I just started offering themed pedis and mixing some of my own product. My insurance covers me if i use it in the salon, to retail it I would need more insurance. I would like to start marketing my own line of bath and body product through the salon, starting small and building from there. I would be making the products at my home (hopefully). I am having trouble finding out about regulations concerning this though. I had a home business a few years ago doing embroidery and sports uniforms but bath and body is very different. I will probably get insurance from indie beauty or soapmakers guild unless anyone has a better suggestion? If anyone out there knows where to direct me to find out about state regulations concerning beauty products I would appreciate it so much! I live in Oklahoma and there does not seem to be as many soapers here as in other states.

some personal facts

After reading my previous post I didn't want everyone to think that work is all that is on my mind. I am forty-mpffff years old, have three kids, the oldest just graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University where she was attending on a softball scholarship, second daughter is in second year of college and a very creative and artistic person. Lone child left at home is the only boy, counting my stepdaughter he has three older sisters (I blame them!) no, he is a great kid and incredibly talented guitar player. I have always been fascinated with cosmetics and body care products and finally feel I might have the time to pursue it. This is the first spring in seventeen years we have not followed a softball team around. the last eight have been softball, football and cheerleading all year round pretty much. So now I am opening a new chapter of my life and am getting very excited about it! I made some lotion bars and after giving them to a few friends and customers I am very encouraged by the feedback I have been getting. I love making people feel good! Anyway, that's my story. :D

Hello and welcome from Australia scout! You will find this forum full of friendly helpful people with good advice. I make MP and CP soap and body butters and am interested in making lotion bars soon too. Isn't it addicting making your own B&B products!

Tanya :)

hello topcat

Hi Topcat! I think you are the first Australian I have spoken to! I have not spent much time in forums or chat rooms so far. Addicting is right! I am developing a serious problem. I am nervous about using lye and the whole cold process thing but my goal is to do it sometime this summer. I am afraid my gardening time will be severely cut into by my new obsession. Lotion bars are so easy to make and everyone I have gifted with one has really liked it. My major weakness is scent, I am drawn to all different kinds depending on my mood or the season. I think I am really in trouble.

Oh no, you're a FO ho!!!

I was like you only 4 months ago....I read everything I could find on this forum and on several wonderful webpages, especially about.com which has an excellent short video showing you how to achieve trace in your soap batter....it made so much sense, so I took all safety precautions and visualised all the steps first (that really helped) then made soap and it was as easy as making a cake from scratch! Love it!!!

This is the link:- http://candleandsoap.about.com/od/coldp ... Making.htm

All great info there but if you scroll down to the soap making videos you will see how easy it is.

Hi fellow Oklahoman!!!

I'm in Tulsa and new to all this as well!

Welcome!!

Hi Rosey! It is nice to hear from a fellow Okie. I live in Bristow so I am in Tulsa about once a week. What have you made so far? Where do you buy your supplies? I have looked for someplace in tulsa that sells anything I could use but haven't found anything yet.

well i ran into that as well. I couldn't find anything but I found some stuff at walmart like soybean oil = crisco. Walmart also sell goat's milk in powder form. I saw that walmart has grapeseed oil, olive oil, canola. They have coconut oil too but I'd check the price cause it was pricey and it may be cheaper to buy online with that anyways. I haven't looked at costs yet but I will in the next few weeks. The rest I got from http://www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com/ and http://www.snowdriftfarm.com/

Stuff like bowls, safety glasses, stick blender, gloves, wooden spoons, distilled water, etc. I got all that at walmart.

I saw a few people recommended http://sweetcakes.com/ but i haven't looked at their site yet.

As far as molds go, I came up empty. I thought maybe if anything Michael's or Hobby Lobby would have something but nada. I ordered a few from wholesalesupplies and all that should come in tomorrow. (i went overboard and got a loaf mold, cutter and beveler from TOG too http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5260931) I have to say I was drooling over his big molds but couldn't justify that expense yet.

I haven't done anything yet at all. The stuff should be here tomorrow and I'm pretty much ready to go.

I haven't gone to Akins yet. I know some people put things like seeds in their soaps and stuff and I'm wondering if you can find it there.

What have you done?

And I know where Bristow is of course. It's nice to have someone else on the forum that's close by! (and I'm ready for spring to be here! Course not that I can complain about this winter though).

edit: oh i forgot, walmart has lard and shortening too if you're looking for those and I got an electronic scale online for 15$ (it had a bowl with it, one can never have too many bowls right?)

Rosey you are ahead of me in the game. I have some melt and pour coming Tuesday from soapies. I am going to start buying the equipment for cold process so I can do my first batch this summer. I have to admit I am nervous about that.I have made lotion bars and scrubs and foot soaks to use at work. I have used wsp, but my favorite scents so far have come from Brambleberry. I mix their strawberry and champagne and it is wonderful! Are you planning on selling or just making soap for your own enjoyment?

not really, you've actually made stuff! I'm going now to make stuff. Brown came with my stuff!
