Hi soapers. I've been trying to find a slow moving soap. It was suggested to me to keep OO at least 50%. So..here's what I came up with:
50% OO
15% CO
5% castor
10% shea
10% RBO
10% mango
6.5% superfat
What do you all think? If this is a huge fail, what would the normal %'s of hard butters to oil be for a slow tracer.
I know FO can affect this, so ignoring FO, what do you think is best?

Do you have any issues using lard? Its a slow moving fat so I always recommend it. Something like 40% OO, 40% lard, 15% coconut, 5% castor. It will be a hard, gentle, mild soap.

I would leave out the butters for a truly slow moving recipe, you really do not want the stearic acid that butters contain. Obsidian is correct, lard is hard to beat as a slow mover. When I made my test samples of lard and tallow, I thought the lard would never trace, and ended up pouring at a very very light trace.

Thanks obsidian. Will consider using it. Do you buy it at grocery store? I'm going to go with
50% OO
32%CO
8% shea
8% avocado
2% castor
The numbers looked ok with the soap calc, and I have them all on hand. No lard. Pouring rain outside. No transportation...good day to soap. I think. I've been putting this off for over a week. First, I ran out of lye and needed to order, then came in, and was afraid to fail. Yup! I'm a coward. I see such beautiful soap here. everyone seems to think their soap isn't pretty. I think the soap I see here is beautiful. My soap...not beautiful,.unless you find soap on a SB fab in that case, then mine is gorgeous. thanks for advice, will look into lard

Yep, you'll find lard in any grocery store. Its usually by the meat section, not with the other cooking oils. Soap cool and use full water, it will help slow things down some.

Don't get discouraged when your soap doesn't turn out as planned, it takes time to work out a recipe that behaves for you then you have to practice color/swirl technique.

Thank you! What would I do without all of your help? I'm truly grateful! So glad I found this forum. So much knowledge, help and inspiration that is so graciously shared.

Avocado oil can be used up to 20% without issue, so I would reduce the coconut and add more avocado. Coconut is quick to trace but I don't think avocado is.
