I made a batch of soap Monday and I tried to do a swirl with tumeric infused sweet almond oil. The swirls are a pale yellow and kinda powderish.(is that a word?) And I tongue tested, the swirls zap but the rest of the soap does not. And I also have a phenolphthaline solution that I dropped on the soap, I dropped on the swirls and it turns bright pink, then I dropped on the rest of the soap and stays clear. Any ideas?

Here's my recipe:
CO 29%
OO 40%
PO 21%
Castor 5%
Sw. Almond Oil 5%
I ran it thru soapcalc.
Water as % of oils- 35
Superfat- 5%

Water-11.76 oz.
Lye- 4.8 oz.

I infused the tumeric in part of my sweet almond oil and added the rest of the SAO with the rest of my oils, when I reached light trace I added about a cup of raw soap to my infused oil and swirled. Do I need to rebatch? And if I do, do I add anything?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

ETA: My total weight of oils-33.6 oz.

I think you're going to need to carefully rebatch. Your infusion threw the balance of your recipe off, and now you have lye heavy swirls in a heavily superfatted batch. You can't easily split up the oils like you did and have it turn out.

I use turmeric in my soap too, but it blends fine without infusing it....just add some to a little bit of soap at trace, mix well, and stir into the batch you want to color or swirl with. I recently did one called desert sunset, and the main part is colored with turmeric, and the layer is brick red oxide. Turned out great......warm gold and red. :)

Thanks Mike! I'm glad to know that tumeric does not need to be infused, i thought I read somewhere that soap gets grainy if you don't, but your word is good enough for me!! How do I go about to rebatch, do I need to add water or oil? Thank you so much!!!

Well...you shouldn't really need to add oil to the mix if you're sure you measured right.....but it probably wouldn't hurt to add a tablespoon or so olive oil per pound of soap just to ensure the lye heavy stuff has something to work on.

You can rebatch in a couple of ways.....the nicest result being in the crock pot.

Basically....don some protective gloves, and shred your soap into the crock pot. Add 4 oz water per pound of soap, or you can use milk. Turn your crock pot on low, and heat gently until soap shreds turn translucent. Stir thoroughly at this point, add any oil and FO/EO you want, and plop into molds. Smooth the top, and give it a few days before unmolding and a couple weeks to cure and dry out.

The other method involves using the microwave at 50% power and is a lot quicker and not as pretty. Add the soap shreds and water to a microwave safe bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and zap at 3 minute intervals until it's translucent.....then proceed like before.

Either way, give the soap plenty of time to sit after you rebatch, and do a ph test....but I think you can save it....just not as pretty. :(

BTW Mike, your soap sounds beautiful! I would love to see pics!

I'm going to have to get it ouside into some natural light....I've tried pics with my camera, and the layers just don't show through (they're subtle but pretty)....I'll post some good pics if I can.
