Was wondering if some one might be able to help me with my soap.
I used this combination
50% olive
30% palm
20% coconut
SF@10%

The soap went to full gel. Didn't over heat or do anything strange.
Vanilla FO.
Went to cut it this morning & its fatty feeling. Like there's excess fat on the surface. It feels like fat even.
Could this b the palm oil??? I've never used palm, why???? one might ask, I just have never had access to it but finally ordered some online. So its my first time using palm.
Did I SF too high for palm???? I didn't think 10% would b too high.
Any thoughts on what might have happened or what it is. Its whitish looking but not dry like ash.

I did once get this when I used fresh chocolate in a soap & I got a fatty type residue then too........... thinking its fat.... (insert confused look).

Don't know why, maybe it needs some more time to harden/dry up.

I always use palm & have gone up to 50% in the past, I love it!

I'm in country Queensland Chrissy.
The weather maybe???? Its very humid & hot here ATM.
I think it will all dry out (cure) but it was just weird.
I don't know if thats normal or not.

I have had soap come out of the mould after going through gel and setting that has felt greasy. And it has been hot when that has happened.
But it did cure just fine, and not feel greasy at all.
I think that's just what happened, I'd say it will be fine.

i would think it was the olive oil? but im probably mistaken (only very new to making soap).. please someone answer this.. as im interested to learn also..

How did you add your chocolate to your soap, as i love to try that one one day! Will try cocoa powder first..

I dont' think there is anything in your formula (choice of oils, levels, superfat) that would be problematic. Let it cure for at LEAST 2 weeks before making any decisions about it.

When it was in the mold did you see anything odd? did it "sweat"? wrinkle up? have a layer of liquid on top?

did you "superfat" i.e., add extra fat at trace? or did you do a lye discount?

That is a high sf to me, but I usually do 5% (the soapcalc default!). But I would definitely wait anyway because the oil will probably soak in over a week or two and it will feel normal. It's probably just fine.

I go as high as 15-20% in superfat (ok, actually lye discount) without an oily feel.

It did nothing weird... was completely normal the whole way.
I like to insulate. It went to full gel.
I did the SF on soapcalc, set it at 10% & put nothing else in.
No extra oil/butters at trace.
Its not loose oil... its fat... lard looking.
It has dried a bit more this morning & is actually soaking in a bit.
I think it will absord, dry out.
See how it goes.

Thanks for your thoughts.

If it's really hot there, could it have been a little oil separation due to overheating maybe? If you just leave it, it should absorb the oil back into the soap, which as you mentioned it seems like it's already started to do just that.

My next soap I'm going to put in the fridge to be honest.
Try out the no gel method instead.

Maybe it's your FO..I had a mango FO that did the same thing. Same recipe I used before but it did strange things with the Mango FO. I just let it cure longer and it was fine.

what is lye discount mean??

Using less lye than is required to saponify the fats used (also referred to as "superfatting). The higher the discount, the more unsaponified oils left in the bar, making it less drying (the term I prefer over "moisturizing" but the word "moisturizing" is batted around quite a bit). SoapCalc has a default of 5%, but you can choose more or less of a discount depending on what you want to achieve with the soap.
