Well Long story short. I started soaping in 2005 when we moved to NM and my 5yr old son's skin went nuts, especially during the winter. His hands were so bad that people thought he always had brown dried dirt on them. No commercial product helped, and actually made him scream in pain. That's when I met a goat farmer lady and she introduced me to her soaps.....Wow. The whole world opened up for me. Well I researched and created a recipe for us that has really helped his skin problem that his hands don't chafe like that anymore. His skin is actually healthy during winter.

So, I think I'm ready to move onto the next issue he and his little brother has. During the summer they get open sores on their heads due to scratching so much. I've taken them to the doctor thinking it's bug bites, but each time they say it's DRY SKIN. WHAT? Ok, so let's say it's dry skin and not NoSeeUms (the little biting flys that you can't see).

I want to/need to try and make a homemade shampoo for them, and summer is a few months away so I have time to practice right now. Even the most moisturizing shampoo and conditioner on the market isn't working. So I think a homemade shampoo and conditioner that has the healing effect of real soap may hellp. Does anyone have a good starter recipe that they would share with me, or point me in the right direction of creating one. I've never done liquid soap but have the proper lye for it. Thank you so much.

Jojoba oil, Camellia oil, sapote oil, watermelon seed oil are all really good for hair...I wouldn't use anything that causes tingling sensation in your shampoo recipe...Do they maybe have eczema on their scalps? I'm not making a diagnose but I say take them to a dermatologist they are suppose to be the skin experts....

Interesting thought. It only happens during the hot summer months, that's why I think/thought it's biting flies. I guess taking them to a doctor three summers in a row and not getting an answer, but paying for the doc visit I'm kinda turned off to do it again this year. That's why I want to try a homemade shampoo.

Thanks for the thoughts.

You could make a Castille Shampoo which is 80% EVOO and then do 10% Coconut, 5% Jojoba, 5% Shea - 5% Lye Discount - & -400% water discount - this is how you figure out how much water you need. I also would add Aloe Vera Extract or Gel and Stearic Acid to get it to stay together. You can going to HP this until there is no zap left. Pour it into a large plastic container and use your mix master to mix it up really, really well. Let it sit overnight - mix again in the morning. You're going to need to mix it up daily for about 4 days. This will give you a thick creamy shampoo which will be very moisturizing.

Make a small batch to start with until you get the forumation to what you like. I've found that my shampoo doesn't lather a whole bunch so I ordered a surfacant to take care of that problem.

HTH and I'm sure others here can add their help as well and perhaps they can tweek this recipe too..... :D

You taking them to their peds doctor or was it an actual dermatologist, who couldn't give you a straight answer as too their symptoms? Well don't give up...Are you in an area were there are alot of trees? I know sometimes you can get those lil bugs that are yellow-color that comes out of the trees during the summer, that bite..Do some further looking in to it...You're bound to come up with a permanent solution along with shampoo and conditioner that will relieve them of their summer agony...

We're in northern NM, which has desert floor, desert mountains, forest mountains, rivers, 4 seasons, snow, etc. Very diverse for a western desert state. Being from Florida I'm always surprised by what happeneds here. I always though it would be dry and that's it. But it's very diverse. We live in desert mountains with junipers everwhere. No trees, just BIG juniper bushes/trees. Some Pinon trees, but they are mostly wiped out by a bore worm a few years ago.

One ped doc told me it was infected NoSeeUm's bites. Two other ped doc told me it's dry skin that they scratched open and it has a secondary infection in it. Then their babysitter told me dry skin bumbs, like the ones she gets. She supports the answer about dry skin gettting infected from scratching. And alot of other people say the same around here. To me it's just weird that it occurs during summer. You'd think if it was dry skin it'd get worse during winter when the moisture is lower.

Lyndy. Thank you for the recipe, but since I've never done this before. Do I use Instructions for making liquid soap? Do you use a pan on the stove, pot in the oven, or crock pot? How big of one of these do I need to use? Thanks again.

I personally HP in my oven at 200 F - I really like that process because it lets me work on other things while it processes.....

Hi,
Those poor boys!
First of all, as Cattleyabubbles said, take them both to a dermotologist. You never know; could be an allergy or something.
At that age, I'd try to wash their hair with water in stead of shampoo/soap as much as possible. Their skin is young and does not yet produce as much tallow as ours does.
I wouldn't look for something moisturizing; but for something hypoallergenic and very very mild; so that their natural skin oils aren't washed away. I do have a recipe that's really good; but I don't know how to translate it; do have the inci so maybe someone can help me out here :?
60% destillated water
25% facetenside (Disodium laureth sulfosuccinate)
10% glycinetenside (Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate)
5% rewoderm (PEG-200 Hydrogenated Glyceryl Palmate (and) PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate)
a pinch of citric acid
Stir this all really wel; make no more than you can use within a week.
Also, once a week, before they go to bed you can rub their heads with almond oil (or any oil you prefer) and wash it out in the morning.
When it's really really bad (kinda sounds that way) you can make them wear thin cotton gloves in bed so they don't sctratch so much in during sleep...
Good luck with your boys!

I have tried baby shampoo, and sensitive skin shampoo thinking it's mild. I've tried scalp treatment shampoo for dry skin, for the dry skin, but not a hypoallergenic shampoo. I wasn't thinking in that direction. Thank you for the recipe. Not sure I understand it, maybe someone can help interrupt. Thanks again.

I'm hopeful that since I'm starting now I may not cure it, but help lessen it this summer becuase always fighting off a secondary infection ALL summer long is very hard on little kids immune systems. And taking antibiotics every year isn't good either, so I want to try and stop it before it starts this year.

Thank you anyone and everyone who can help me formulate a shampoo.

hi there!

this is only my opinion, but if their skin condition (it sounds like non-specific dermatitus-or psoriasis) cleared up using your soap, why don't you you the same soap as a shampoo bar? i use my soaps or glycerice soaps all the time, and my dry itchy, flaky scalp is a distant memory.

maybe add a little rosemary and tea tree oil.

you might also consider giving them flax seed oil supplements, too.

Exactly, Heartsong.....I use my soap bars to wash my hair more often than not now and find them fantastic.....do try that first NMAriel and see how you go....I feel for your poor little ones!

Tanya :)

Good morning Ladies. Heartsong & Topcat thank you. I think I'll make a batch with Tea Tree and Rosemary. I have some already. Thank you.

All of you are so wonderful in helping me. THANK YOU. I feel more positive about this summer than I did before writing. Last year the thought of summer just made me feel a cloud of doom becuase I knew something dreadful was just around the corner. This year, strong positive thoughts of conquerig this THING, whatever it is. Thank you again.
