Hello everyone! I recently started pondering making my own soaps and shampoo bars, and discussing it with my hubby and now we're thinking about starting our own soap business. Cart before the horse? Maybe, but I've been doing a lot of research (since it'll be awhile before I can buy supplies anyway) and I'm still very excited, even with the prospect of having to meet FDA regulations haha! So nice to be here, I intend to learn everything I can from y'all!

From one desert dweller to another, welcome to the forum!

If you aspire to sell, I highly recommend this link which has a lot of useful information about when and if you are ready to sell. You should probably have a minimum of one year's intensive experience before you sell. Making a good consistent product is both a science and an art.

Lye-based CP soap, by the way, is not regulated by the FDA, but by the Consumer Safety Product Commission. If you branch out into anything that's detergent based (bath bombs, shampoo) or lotion or lip balms, those are considered cosmetics and are regulated by the FDA. If you make medical claims, then it's a drug and requires expensive (tens of thousands of dollars) and time consuming testing before bringing to market.

There is a wealth of information here that I hope will be helpful. I don't want to discourage you from selling altogether, just advising you to go slowly and gain experience so that you can offer a consistent, safe product you can take pride in.
