So after my new body butter formula experiment went mysteriously fuzzy, I thought I'd start fresh with a new batch. All my butters were measured and happily melting in the double boiler. As I go to pull the pot out of the double boiler and set it on the counter to cool, I watch as (and I swear this happened in cartoon-like slow motion) as a big, fat drop of water pops out of the double boiler right into my butters. Mystery solved! I believe I now know why the first batch appeared to go moldy! This is like a 6 ounce test batch- I'm used to making these huge batches in enormous stock pots where the distance between the water and the top of the pot more or less precludes the possibility of something like this happening! Ugh!

I just melt my butters in a regular pot on the oven- never any issues. Hope it turns out better!

Best,
Anna Marie

I do that too, on gentle heat and if I have to leave the kitchen, I remove from the stove in case I get distracted and forget what I'm doing.

(Let's not talk about the time I got distracted and forgot to remove 4 lbs of melting lard from the stove before leaving the room!)

Lenarenee, I NEVER can leave the kitchen when working because I WILL forget- lol! I see projects and before I know it I'm working on 5 different things throughout the house, milling from one room to the next when I get distracted :D I'm sure the smell of that lard was lovely for the next few days lingering in the air :D :D

Best,
Anna Marie

I resemble those remarks! I bought an electronic timer that has a clip on the back. When I put ANYTHING on the stove or in the oven, that gets set and clipped to my clothes. Just never, ever ask about the oatmeal....OK?
