Greetings!

I've been lurking on these forums on and off for some time now and finally decided to take the plunge and sign up. I've only made a few batches of soap so far for personal use and have been doing quite a bit of reading on how to improve my methods as well as learning other DIY stuff. Very informative forum, still have lots to learn.

Cheers!

Thanks summerflyy! I can assure you they weren't pretty but they do work! I'm an outdoorsy type person so I made one batch with Cedarwood and Tea Tree EO's and another with Peppermint EO because I love the smell. They don't last as long as I'd like them to but that's why there's trial and error.

:) Hi there! And welcome aboard!!
I am brand new too and I am still just in the learning research phase of things. You are further ahead then I am though, I have not made my first batch yet.but I did order some things this past Tuesday so I can finally get started after researching since December. Lol. It's the whole lye thing and volcanoes that have me dragging my feet. Not to mention the fact that there are a gazillion things you could buy, need to buy, and can buy from that it's hard to make choices on things. Or is that just me? Lol. I think I spent a month just researching the scales and stick blenders!! And then I still couldn't decide so I asked on here for some advice. Anyways, welcome again to the board!! I look forward to seeing you on here.

Haha ! I am the same as you ! I've made 5 batches, all in small amount and all aren't pretty at all ! LOL.

I ended up with really ugly bars, one batchh had white specks all over them because I didn't melt down my palm oil and stir it well. Lesson learnt. If not, it would have been a beautiful soap. But it worked really well.

Turns out that the ugliest soap I've made is my favourite ! (I made another kind of pretty soap with lemongrass eo and eucalyptus eo, THE SCENT WAS SO STRONG I REGRETTED LOL)

How did your EO blend (cedarwood and tea tree) smell like ???

Ok, for some reason, I can't check the box that says "quote message in reply". I'm guessing I may have to post a few times before it's enabled? No biggie...

Paula (sprklngsaphire), thanks! I was nervous about the lye at first too, just be sure to mix it in a well ventilated area and slowly add the lye to the water, not the other way around. I have a very small kitchen so when I mixed, I did it on the stove top and turned the exhaust fan on or placed it on the windowsill with the window open to allow air to circulate. For initial start-up, I probably spent more than I should have so to answer your question, yes, there certainly is a lot you can buy. I have enough supplies to last a long time and didn't think about the shelf life of some of the oils I purchased. I've also been making my own lotions/insect repellent/sunscreen so the oils are going to other uses, just not as quickly as I had originally thought. I hope I don't end up having to throw anything away, that's for sure.

summerflyy, eucalyptus alone is a very strong scent! EO's can be hit or miss and if you use too much, well, I guess you already figured that one out! lol. The best way I can describe the Cedarwood and Tea Tree mix would be something similar to an evergreen type smell, sort of like a mix of different types of pines or a woodsy type scent. It's not my everyday soap though, I mostly use it when I return from hiking as a prevention against ticks, etc. since they don't like the smell. EO's are proving to be a challenge to me as well, I'm still learning about them as I go so it also adds another challenge to my soap making, but it's been fun so far!

Ah ! I have cedarwood but I don't exactly know what would blend with it LOL. Would love to use it!

Your soap sounds like it would be a really beautiful soap and very fragrant !

What got you into making soaps !

It has a very nice but not overwhelming scent and makes me feel like I'm in the middle of the woods. As far as mixing goes, I'm no expert on EO's so the best I can tell you would be to search the internet for what blends well with it. A few that seem to be consistent across the websites that I checked out are lavender, juniper, cypress, and rosemary to name a few. Ironically, I didn't find a single site that mentions mixing with tea tree but it smells good to me.

What got me into making soaps? It's kind of anticlimactic but some time ago, I realized I could save money by making my own cleaning supplies and originally started with making my own laundry detergent. That pretty much got the ball rolling for me. I also like the idea of moving away from most of the harsh chemicals that are used to make your soaps and everyday cleaning and hygiene solutions when there are more natural ones out there that do the same or better jobs. What keeps my attention with soap making are the endless possibilities and the challenge it poses to a newbie such as myself. I have more than enough soap made right now so I'm just continuing to research to see what else I can find. Safe to say I haven't run out of things to read about when it comes to soap making!
