I want to make a peppermint chocolate mocha soap. I have nettle leaf but I know in my HP batch it left green specks (from the leaf itself) which I added at after cook. When I infused the nettle leaf in olive oil and mixed in lye water it looked beige not green. Is there a way to get a green tint without getting the green specks from the nettle. Or will I need to buy a different colorant? anything I have around the kitchen that could be used?

There is a thread on here somewhere about using food colouring. I don't know if green was achieved but you can always experiment with that.

I use spinach leaf powder, I put this in when melting my oils. It works well and you may get a few flecks of powder, but all my bars are a medium dark green.

I just remembered, you can use eyeshadow. I use loose eyeshadow made by jordana, its mostly micas and oxides. Here is one batch I did with a bright pink and light green. I also used TD which caused the steric crackle but the look has grown on me. This particular batch is a favorite among family, my mom calls it the pretty soap.

I may give some old eyeshadow a try. Maybe make a small batch to see how I can do a swirl. I'm super excited to give my first swirl a try!

If you can get dried nettle or comfrey at a health food store, infuse some in olive oil and you will get a nice pretty green.

Green food coloring won't work, it will morph. Red (red 40, not 3) and yellow food coloring don't morph, and with an experiment blue food coloring makes a pretty purple but it hasn't finished curing so I don't know if it will change.

I used celery for a really nice green. It was pale green with green specks, but if I had infused more I'm sure I could have gotten a bright green because the green before I mixed the infused oil in with the others was awesome. But it did leave green specs. I liked it though, and actually sprinkled some more of the herb on the top for some darker green spots.

anyone try using MAC eyeshadow pigments to color?
i've tried eyeshadow from mineral makeup, and that worked fine..

the MAC ones have such pretty colors. I have several and am tempted to try them

Super nice soaps Houseofwool!!! Have you used wheat grass before? Just wondering if it stays that pretty green color, or if it changes over time. I've used a few "natural" colorants including spirulina, but I just can't get pretty, lasting shades of green with them...they all seem to fade or oxidize.

I found that the blue food coloring starts out a pretty but light purple which gradually turns darker pretty purple over a 4wk cure. :)

And that pink eventually fades to peach when in use. And that green turns brown.

I like comfrey powder or nettle powder infused in dark green olive oil for a nice olive green. Haven't tried any sort of bright green yet. But looking at all these suggestions with interest to think about some xmas themed soaps. :)
