I found another soaper on my local CraigsList who is giving up. I bought all of her remaining stuff today for a really great price. My wife was shocked when I walked through the door with about 300 pounds of oils!

It was very interesting to be able to go through another soaper's stuff. See what other people are doing, etc.

But, this generated some questions for me.

About 150 lbs of the oils are oil that I use. But the other 150 lbs is stuff I don't use.

There was Palm Kernel Flake, Soybean Oil, and Vegetable Shortening.

Palm kernel works similar to coconut and babassu. Soybean oil is a nice budget oil that I've seen in labels of previous handmade soaps I've used, and helps with creamy lather. A lot of people here use shortening, you should read the label and see what's in it.

Try a Google search like this, loads of threads turned up -> palm kernel flakes site:soapmakingforum.com <- and so on with your other stuff. I did that when I was new with loads of keywords hehe

Not really too many questions yet. I was just kind of sharing my experience.

There was a 50 lb unopened box of Soybean. I've never used it but, it seems like there is mixed feelings out there on Soybean.

So now I'm thinking my deal may not have been as good as I had initially thought. I only dropped $100 and I did get a lot of stuff that does not have a shelf life such as a nice cutter (with multiple knives), multiple molds, and a nice stainless steel cooking pot. I did get close to 60 bottles of fragrance oil which I do not know how old they are, but they all smell just as good as ones I've bought recently.

So here is where it gets interesting.
I received multiple cases of 76 Degree Coconut, Soybean, Castor, and Pomace Olive Oil. A nice soap recipe with just those 4 oils!
I've tried to decipher the lot numbers on the boxes and I'm thinking these oils can possibly be 6 or 7 years old. I didn't think about this until after the purchase and I was home. All of these boxes are still unopened factory sealed! I did read some posts about some people using 5 and 6 year old stuff with no problems.

Any thoughts?

Congrats on your score!
I've soaped old oils with no problem... here's what I would do...

Since the oils are factory sealed, I would have no problem soaping them. You have a Tried & True basic recipe there -- I've probably made it or something very similar. I assume the soybean oil is solid? Choose "hydrogenated" soy on SoapCalc. Think of it as "Crisco", which makes a very nice creamy soap and takes the place of palm oil in recipes that contain palm.

Map out a strategy for using up those oils within a year. If you have room in your freezer, you can mix up the oils, add antioxidant ROE to extend shelf life (I also use Vitamin E 1,000 IU PPO). My slab mold holds 60 oz oils, so I would store in gallon ZipLocs until ready to soap.

You didn't say what size bottle the FOs are in. I use 4 oz fragrance in a 60 oz oils batch. So I would use those up first as well as any bottles larger than 4 oz. For smaller sizes, I would blend similar scents, i.e., florals, citrus, herbal, etc. to make 4 oz. Take your time blending scents... let your nose be your guide. I set aside an afternoon, uninterrupted, to do that.

Oh geez... I almost forgot... Before you do anything else, run that recipe through SoapCalc or whatever calculator you're comfortable with, take a screen shot, and post it in the Recipe Feeback Forum to get ideas for what you can add for variety. That should getcha started.

HAPPY SOAPING!

pics of your haul!

PKO - use it in place of coconut. Soybean oil - I'm personally meh about it in soap. Veg shortening - it probably contains palm. You could probably use the Crisco Veg shortening option on a soap calc and be fine. some brands - such as Spectrum - are 100% palm.

... it seems like there is mixed feelings out there on Soybean.
95% of soybean oil manufactured in the USA is considered GMO (genetically modified) and banned in Europe and other countries. So there is a resistance to purchasing soy in food. In soap, however, it makes a very nice budget-wise bar, as Dawni mentioned. I've used it. I like it. I used to get 35 lbs at Costco but they don't carry it any more. No worries.

PKO - use it in place of coconut.
Lucky you! I luv Palm Kernel Oil! My favorite liquid soap is 50/50 PKO + Lard! I have a hard bar recipe for PKO and Olive that I'm happy to share. As Dixie said, use coconut or PKO or a blend of coconut + PKO for high lather and hardness, generally at 30% or less, depending on the other oils in the recipe.

You people are the best!

I've actually trashed the Palm Kernel Flakes. This was an open box and was about 50-75% full. The flakes did not smell bad whatsoever, but some of them had a very very slight yellowing which I didn't want to deal with.

There is a box of Palm also that is opened that I am unsure of. It is about 80% full. I didn't trash it yet. It doesn't feel as hard as previous palm oil that I've worked with. I can kind of squeeze my hands through it kind of like Crisco. It actually is not discolored and does not have a bad smell, but it does send this weird sensation up my nose when I smell it. So I'm still unsure.

But still factory sealed/unopened (All Soaper's Choice brand), I still have
100 lbs of 76 Degree Coconut
50 lbs of Solid Soy
50 lbs of Pomace Olive
35 lbs of Castor

About 75% of the fragrances are from SweetCakes and they have usage rates on their website!
