Hi

I am a beginner and trying to make goat milk soap. The soap does fine until I add the fragrance oil. When it gets to trace I add it and my soap goes immediately hard. So then I tried adding it earlier and the soap got grainy. Does anyone know what the problem would be? Would it matter if I use citrus type scents with the milk? Sometimes it works and sometimes not. Very frustrated. Thanks Barb

Hello

I have used many fragrances. From probably 4 different companies. The strange thing is sometimes they work. Most problems seems to be with the citrus FO's.

Have you tried essential oils? I make GM soap and have not had a problem using essential oils.

Some FOs work great - others will rice and seize the soap batter. See if the folks you are buying from test their FOs and post the results. That will help you avoid ones that speed trace.

Your FO is most likely an accelerator. It speeds up the trace in your soap, resulting in the quick emulsification. Contact the company that you purchased it from and ask about it. :)

Citrus fo is acid and most likely distilled in alcohol ,both will accelerate trace, try cooling your batch a bit more before mixing and adding fo drop by drop at the very end to a cooler batch.
Good luck

Sometimes you can stick blend the mix back to a looser consistency too.
