What would be the purpose of removing glycerin from the soap? Does it make it harder?

I personally wouldn't, but there are two reasons to do it. Yes it can make your soap harder (you boil out the glycerin, and then grind up the soap and let it dry out some then press it into a bar) and glycerin can be sold.

commercial companies do it. why a handcrafter would do it I cannot imagine - it's a skin caring component of soap.

Thank you for replying. I just wondered because I had it in my head that you want glycerin in your soap and that's one of the reasons for making your own.

yep.

commercial soaps are typically made by blending purified "salts of fatty acids". which means someone saponifies oils and then separates out the sodium X-ate from the water and the glycerin. The chosen components are then blended and things added such as some of the glycerin and other stuff. This gives the manufacturer a lot of control and a more consistent product since the SAP of oils actually can vary from batch to batch. Plus stocking these sodium X-ates is easier since they are very stable.
