I made a soap last night with sage, citrus, verbena , lemongrass scents.
I really don't like it and I find it to strong. My husband loves it.
Same with lavender. To strong for me, not crazy about it. He really likes it.
The fragrances I love, the vanillas, almonds, some flower scents, never seem strong enough to me.
The ones I don't like so much are plenty strong or to strong.
Is this just me?
Are the scents I love just scents I crave more of?
In other words could the strength I smell or the lack of it be because of my own bias toward the scent?
Has any one else noticed anything like this?

It could be that your nose isn't working right. The ones you use a lot of your olfactory will actually detect less of over time because of constant smell overload. I notice the ones you list that you don't like are strong citrus herbals. It's okay not to like a certain category of fragerences, imo. After all, you can't like everything, and there's a common smell in those you don't like. On the same kind of note, for example, I don't like florals. I don't really want to smell Lilac Rose Geranium coming down the hallway. It's that "hooker in Paris" smell - just overkill. Just something about those ones turns me off, though I love lavender. It's not really a strong floral though, it's more of an herbal floral, maybe that's why I like it. Hope this helps!

kinda, it's just that my favs seem weaker in my soap to me.
The ones I'm not nuts for seem stronger to me but are they really or
do they just seem that way cuz I don't like them to much?
I need a strength detector.

i can understand exactly what you mean, because i got a serious problem. i just recently started using EO's & FO's , and i find that i only like the citrus scents , so far orange and litsea/lemongrass. i spend a lot of time at the health food store essential oils rack and each time i walk away wondering if my schnoze is malfunctioning , because all those oils others rave about does nothing for me . i was trying hard to stay away from FO's or use them just on specialty soaps . i think my next bet is to order some essential oil blends and see if they fit the bill
who k(nose) maybe one day it will all kick in as i work with them more and more

I like citrus scents but I've smelled Energy and I just don't care for it because it's like an astringent orange. Rose Geranium and Litsea aren't sweet enough for me either. But if you want a sweet lemon or orange cream, you might likely end up with brown soap. I can't get into food scents except I love Chocolate and Coconut. Oatmeal Milk and Honey scents all smell great to me. I haven't tried one I didn't like so far. Mint is nice but you smell it three times a day in toothpaste so how much mint do you really want in your life is the question. But for some people mint = clean.

That Lovespell from Peak's I got a bar of from another soaper was fantastic (all gone now). It was fresh, sweet, fruity and a little bit of everything. I can't wait to order some but of course I'll have to see if it does okay with goat milk or best without. I wish I just made all water soaps and that would solve the morph problem I just had from happening. Too bad I like creamy milk soaps alot.

I think I like a scent because it worked out. But I don't seem to reach for the bar on the sink so I guess my nose knows me better than I do.

Certain fragrances trigger emotions. I'm not a psychiatrist or doctor so I can't make claims, but studies have found that we link memories to particular scents. I can't stand the smell of certain colognes because it reminds me of someone whom I don't care for, but food scents always make me think of happy memories...and I'm a big foodie too so there's that. ;)
