I've heard of these but wasn't adventuresome enough to try...well i'll take that back i did just get cranberry & blueberry powder.....but not the bannana or mango. how are you going to use these? at trace or in lye? i'm thinking at trace?

Yea, I think at trace. Sure wouldn't take much. I'd be afraid to add them to the lye. Maybe to the oils like I do my milk sometimes and then add the lye water. Not sure, maybe someone else will tell us the best way to do it :)

Hi Dixie, I have used banana powder in my avocado soap, along with pureed avocado pulp and that soap is awesome! I use it on my body, face and hair - I am seriously loving it. Banana is soooo good for your skin and seems to have come through the lye muncher with its properties intact! I blended the avocado pulp and banana powder into some aloe juice and then SB'd that into my oils well, before adding the lye water. You could also SB the powder straight into the oils IMHO.

topcat...does the banana powder smell like bananas?

It has only a light scent IMO and smells banana-ry - maybe more like banana cake than fresh banana?

Here is what my supplier writes about it:-

Banana
Green Code:4
Preservative and filler free

Banana fruit powder extract is rich in potassium and Vitamin A. In formulations it has proven to be great for dry skin, and contains no known substance to aggravate or irritate the skin. Some users have used banana fruit extract by itself as a rich, moisturizing facial mask.
Usage Rate: Up to 0.5% of total formula

I got it from a New Zealand company Aromatics & More Ltd.

mmm sounds tasty! I'm one of those people who likes banana fragrance but hates the taste of real bananas lol. Strawberry powder looks great, please post pics when you're done :)

I haven't even bought any yet LOL, but I will!

The strawberry was intresting to me because of it rejuvination of skin cells. I'm thinking ok, if it does that and I add some jojoba oil!!! That will be some 'WOW" soap :)

Strawberries are a rich source of vitamin C, antioxidants, and naturally occurring salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA). BHA's help loosen dead skin cells, allowing new, healthy cells to come to the skin's surface. Because BHAs are oil soluble, they penetrate pores more effectively than water soluble alpha-hydroxy acids. People with known salicylic acid sensitivities should avoid BHA's, and rely on AHA's instead. Drum dried, preservative free, reddish pink powder without seeds. Rejuvenate your skin with this Strawberries & Cream Facial formula. INCI: Fragaria Virginaia (Strawberry)

Is there a source for these powders in the USA?

thesoapdish.com is in Indiana, I believe.

I have used their pumpkin powder in a facial masque. It is rather greenish- smells like raw pumpkin- not that pleasing for applying to the face. It was rather drying I thought.

I hadn't considered trying it in soap- maybe that will be my next batch![/url]

****oo-
The advantage for a facial mask or as an addition to a milk bath would be to make a dry mixture that wouldn't spoil. I can be packaged, shipped and sold without refrigeration. When it is used, the product is mixed with a wetting ingredient or added to the bath, and the benefits of the fresh product is realized.

I'm not sure what the benefit would be in soap, except that the liquid of the fresh fruit might change your water requirement. Convenience would be one advantage. It is usually difficult to get strawberries out of season, for instance. I have found that fresh ingredients often turn brown in soap. I don't know how the powders behave. I'm assuming that the powder would re-hydrate and may behave as fresh ingredients would- turn brown. Might be worth a try, though.

I have made a soap with pureed mango and strawberry fresh fruit in it - didn't discount my water at all as I don't use very much; I then made the same soap with only the mango puree added. My DD who it is for (she uses it as a facial soap) tells me that the one with the strawberry added works better at clearing and healing her breakouts. Both soaps work, but the strawberry one works faster.....I only added a total of 1 tablespoon of puree ppo to each batch. I added a little bit of TD to the first soap and it ended up a creamy colour. The second one (mango only) was coloured with paprika extract to be a more mango colour.

She hasn't tried the one with avocado pulp and banana powder in it yet.

Nah - the strawberry seeds looked pretty and speckly and the pulp was pureed very smooth so just sort of disappeared into the batter! This is a pic of the one with pureed mango & strawberry in it. The front ones have mica dusted onto them:-

I thought using fresh fruit in soap was supposed to cause it to spoil fairly quickly.

Is it the puree process that helps keep the soap from spoiling or do you have to add some sort of preservative to the mix? From the limited number of posts I have found dealing with food additives, I get the impression that saponification iteself, prevents spoilage if using purees and limiting to 1 tbsp per pound oils.

I really want to use fruits in my creations, but at the cost of oils and butters, I don't want to make something that will go moldy or rancid before I can use it.

Hi Jarvan - This soap is over 6 months old now and just keeps getting better. Yes, I have read that you need to use well-pureed food so the soap batter surrounds every molecule.....worked for me!
