I bought some food grade vanilla and it smells heavenly, but is it safe to use in soap, I don't care about the color turning dark. Has anybody tried it.

Hi Maria

I have used it and also vanilla paste.

Sadly, the smell hardly comes through the soap so it was a waste of good Vanilla Extract and Vanilla Paste.

That is a shame, the vanilla I have is oil based and I have about 16 0z so maybe if I put 1oz ppo it could give a subtle scent..
Well It can't hurt to try since i have alot of vanilla.

so, the vanilla eo at health store smells exactly like home vanilla, is it the same?

probably not the same.

if you read the ingredients on your cooking vanilla extract you will see that it's lots of got alcohol in it (at least 35% http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vanilla_extract).

There is something called Natural Vanilla Flavoring which is said to contain much less alcohol .

This is a GREAT description of the various vanillas for cooking: http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/vanilla.htm

your vanilla health food store "EO" isn't - there are vanilla oleoresin and vanilla absolute. they are in a solvent too tho I couldn't tell you what solvent. EOU says absolutes containe ethanol (and hexanes) but I don't know if they are all the same. absolutes are much much more concentrated than the vanilla extract though and have the alcohol in there at 5% or less.
