Has anyone ever added FO into oils before adding lye? I saw on a FB group a guy did that he said it went ok but just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about doing that.

Yes, sometimes that can help with a tricky FO that wants to accelerate or rice. It's not a guarantee but it might help, shouldn't be a problem tho.

I didn't even know it was possible. He also said he strains his lye/water as well. Is that something that a lot of people do?

I have never strained the lye water, but I have heard of doing when you dissolve your lye in milk to make sure any undissolved crystals don't get in the soap batter where they could cause harm later. Be sure you use a stainless steel strainer tho!

I always add my FO to the oils before I add my lye and I have strained my lye before when it looks like it needs it.

I'll put everything I possibly can into the oils before adding the lye, be it the FO, colloidal oats, purés, clays, milk powder, it all goes into the oil so I can stick blend it all really, really well without having to worry about time. The less there is to have to fiddle and fuddle around with after the lye is added, the better.

Very normal. If you are using an FO that browns and you want to keep part of your batter white, you can't do that. Then you have to wait until you separate off what you want to stay white, then add the FO to the rest. Once you get used to adding the FO to the oils, it's easy to plop it in and then swear when you realize you just screwed up your plan.

Haha! That's too funny! But that really does make a lot of sense though. I couldn't understand why I just needed help to wrap my tiny brain around it. Hehe
