I am going to attempt making soap this weekend. I'm not sure the proper terminology - but it will be the kind that you do not have to use lye for... generally I have seen recipes that include melting down bars of soap for this. Is it possible to use liquid castile soap instead of melting down a bar? Would love to use my Dr. Bronner's as I have a ton of it!

I think you're talking about melt and pour (or mp). Which is when you melt down a soap base that has been specialy formulated to be remelted.

I can't tell you if melting store bought soap will work, because I've heard some people say that it does. But when I tried it a long time ago, it didn't work.

Genny,

Yes, that's what I am talking about. Melt & pour. I've seen various recipes that include store bought plain soap (castile or white).... just hoped to be able to substitute liquid castile for that.

:)

If it's liquid when you buy it, then it won't harden up.

Martha Stewart used to do crafts with melted Pears glycerin soap, but I could never make it work because of all the bubbles/streaks that showed up in the finished product.

Better to get some melt and pour base -- there are many online retailers. You can do some amazing things with melt and pour.

Visit Brambleberry's site here:

They are a good company with a wonderful selection of melt and pour bases.

Using liquid soap wouldn't work. As Suisan2 said, it won't harden up.

You can try store-bought plain soap if you want, but there are usually additives in there that can make melting it down somewhat difficult, and it will not go as smoothly as you'd like. You'll have a much better experience with a Melt & Pour base which is designed to melt smoothly. And you can have fun with it by adding your own scents and colors, etc...
