On april 8, I made a 100% canola oil test batch. I knew it would develop DOS but I wanted to see what kind of a time frame it would be in my conditions.
I checked my little bars today and 2 out of four have DOS, not a lot yet but its very bright orange. I'm going to keep the bars, see how long it takes until they are gross enough not to be usable.
This has made me decide not to use canola in any of my soaps, its just not worth the risk.

The one batch I made with a small amount of canola is fine so far, I just don't want to take the chance. I really think the environment has a lot to do with DOS. Look at your trouble with lard but I never get DOS on my lard soaps, even when using 100%

To date, I've only ever seen 1 bar of soap get DOS out of...many. But we hold the house humidity no higher than 45% in summer, in the 30% range in winter.

I do avoid all oils that can cause DOS in soap, though, and I'm sure that helps. I wouldn't ever make a canola oil bar except in the interest of Science.

Thanks for the test and letting us know your results. I was thinking of using Canola, but the DOS issue is a severe drawback.

This was just for testing purpose, I like making single oil soaps to see how they behave. I was planning to keep these bars until they were eww gross but went ahead and tossed. They made fairly decent lather but it was difficult to rinse and left a weird film.
I'll stick with avocado oil if I want something a bit different in my soap, I like it and no DOS.
