I'm getting a little down about my soap making. The last order I got was about a month ago. I really wanted this to be a big success and I just dont know how to get it going. I'm having a really hard time making my labels look professional. I see so many others do their labels and make them look very professional. I guess I'm just feeling down right now.

It takes a lot of work, many, many hours & tons of research to get a good product line. That is what most people don't get. It *looks* so easy, but anything done well does. You see the ice skaters gliding around the rink like they are angels, they make it look easy, but it's not & neither is having a successful soap (or any)business. It will come to you but it will take time. Stick around the forums, you will pick it all up as time goes on. Spend an hour a day googling bath & body products & using the yahoo image searches. You will get it, just don't expect it to come quickly.

Evey business has a down time. It's just a fact.Especially with candles and soap.Candles are a luxury item.People aren't paying $5.00 for a large pillar when they have the price of gas and food going up.

Take this down time of yours and put it to good use.Work on your labels, and design something that reflects you, your product and personality.Don't worry what others might say.Your soap does the talking for you.The labels is just eye candy really.

Take your time getting into it..You won't appreciate customers calling you on the one day off you have at 6:00 am!

Munky.

Hey sweetie, please don't feel down. I appreciate the fact that you want to put the best into your products. It takes a lot of time and effort to get things just the way you want them. I am not very good at labels myself but I do see a lot of small businesses that make up beautiful stickers and labels on their own computers. My boss has a company make hers for a small fee. It can be done! Labels are nice but it is whats inside the label that really matters. Your terrific soaps. Right now I am reworking my cp recipe that has been written in stone for me for the past three years. It is hard but I can't let it get me down. Even though I'm not selling, I still want to make the best products I can. Hang in there! :)

If you don't have money to pour into your company, developing an image of your own takes an enormous amount of time with trial & error. Within the past year and a half, I have changed my co.'s image (not name) so many times, I lost count. I took some time and really thought about the direction I want to take my business. Researched, thought some more and then more research! I don't have the funds to hire someone to create an image for me, so I had to buy/borrow books, search graphic design forums, photography forums and kept at until I was satisfied. Don't get down, get persitent, trust me it will turn out in the end.

Keep your head up...
Shani

You just have to keep at it .. it's just going to take some time .. good things come to those who wait. Keep you head up and keep on fighting.

I've had alot of down times and it can get discouraging but in time everything improves. I agree about google searching other soapers sites and what not to get ideas. It really helped me.

Marketing your Soap Business

I am assuming you have a website and that it is set up for ecommerce. Payments via paypal, googlecheckout and if possible via a merchant account. I use godaddy for several of my sites and have had good results.

Here are some steps you can take to generate traffic to your commerce sites as well as your local outlet.

Number one, make sure your site is easy to use and aesthetically pleasing. Also make sure your products look professional.

Number two, develop recipes and products that solve peoples problems. ie. dry skin, baby soap, odor removal, aromatherapy, etc.. Problems that soaps in stores do not address. Remember that people purchase products to solve problems.

Number three, start writing informational articles on soapmaking, types of soap, benefits of natural soaps, etc.. and post them in a directory on your host server. Address problems that people have and address the solution. Make sure your keywords match what people will be typing in on google, etc.. Put a link back to your commerce site or simply put your phone number on the site. Also, you will need to create a table of contents link page to your articles and have someone post a link to that site on a page that google indexes so that your articles will get picked up.

Business is about solving peoples problems, money and profit is a by product of that process.

Lastly, as you develop traffic to your site and or phone traffic, add more products that complement the ones you have. Investing in your business normally gives you a better return than the stock market or savings accounts and is a heck of a lot more fun.

Good luck,

Steve

discouraged

after doing this for almost 11 years-do NOT get discouraged! my father gave me some great advice that has helped me thru a lot of ups and downs:

1. never give up on the one thing that you love to do. doing what you love inspires you to work harder and improve as your knowledge grows.

2. know your competition! go to some up-scale healthfood stores. you will see TONS of different soaps. look at their packaging, ingredients and prices-WHAT CAN YOU DO TO STAND OUT FROM THE REST?

3. look in off-beat places to sell your product. when i lived in washington state we had a wonderful western outfitters store that sold everything from handmade saddles and tack to western theme jewelry, clothing and home decorations. i loved the smell of new leather everytime i went in there. on a whim, i made some soap-relabled as "gunslinger soap co" making the "best soap west of the pecos", i wrapped up annie oakley lavender, calamity jane lemon,
etc, and a wonderful f/oil that smelled just like leather, called high country. i had 6 soaps, and they were an immediate hit! there were very few items you could buy under $10 in this high-end store. look at musuem gift shops, and other off beat places- another place i sold soap was in a little no-seats coffee bar-i sold hazelnut latte', mocha expresso, etc.

4. nothing beats a face to face sale! if you truly believe in your product, and love what youre doing it will show through your eyes! become as knowledgeable as possible on the subject so you can convince a buyer that you believe your soap is worth buying!

anyway, don't give up-you'll find your path.

there is a very good program for label making, brochures, biz cards, etc called the print shop. it has different versions from $19-89. i have the $49 version it has just about everything you can think of to make professional stuff. it's pretty simple and instructions are understandable. plus it has a huge clipart gallery. i use the heck out of mine!

perhaps someone could recommend other programs, too.

Okay quickish tutorial on it as I am on youngers sisters computor.
1.Scan BF. Then I copy 5 rows by 6 or what ever for a4 paper.I have laser printer.
2.Print out on sheet on card bard, one on glossy photo paper.
3. play cut outs ,but not too neatly, leaving little white edge.
4. Bend butterlfies, several at a time beside body.Folding wings up.
5. Glue Bf's soft one first with thick glue 20 add 3 dimensioal effect.
6. When dry on cigar band allready taped on soap ,you run brush with glue arround wings. Not all arround, just catch here and there so highlights hit it once you have sprinkled fine pixie dust.
7. Draw feelers.
8. Dab glue and on top of feelers.Sprinkle with P. dust.
9. Hve coffee / tea with friends and show off your cleverness.

Thankyou heartsong

Thankyou very much.
It's my passion.Graphic arts and such I guess.Because of that allsorts of good things tumble on in around me.
Tis magic me thinks.
I am just back from two days in Sydney and while there my younger sister used her new commercial embroidery machine to do me up two towels and two shirts with the stardust soap lable and stars on.
What ever has energy in attracts more of it I find.
Soaping is the biggest buzz I have had in years so I am happy to share when I can.
I hope you show us some of yours as you experiment Heart song.
Thanks again
