Hi All,

Below is the recipe that I used to create a thick cream. It’s a slight variation of the recipe I found online. It created a rich and creamy lotion. It doesn’t look as smooth as the other lotions I have made but it still seems very well emulsified.
However, after about a few days, I see a very thin oil film on top. Is it because I don’t put enough e-wax? What should be the e-wax percentage? Is it related to water percentage?

2 tsp of cocoa butter
2 tsp of beeswax
2 tbsp sweet almond oil
2 tbsp of grape seed oil

6-8 tbsp rose water
2 tsp of e-wax
1 tsp of jojoba oil
4 drops of fragrance oil

Also the cream is very greasy. The oiliness doesn’t go away even after 20 mins. What ingredient should I put to get rid or at least reduce the oiliness? I do not like to put cornstarch since I don’t like the feel of it. Is there anything I can put to make it smooth and creamy? Thanks.

Maybe if you added more solid oils it would be less greasy? Not totally sure. Maybe check out some other recipes to see what's common.

I see a few potential issues here:

First, your ingredients are listed by volume, not weight. Weighing your ingredients and using an accurate digital scale are a must.

Second, your amount of oil looks like it equals or may exceed your water. I haven't worked with these personally but from my reading on the topic I gather that a stable emulsion can be harder to obtain than when the oils and butters are a smaller proportion of your recipe. My lotion has about 25% oils/butters total by weight and is plenty thick and not greasy.

What is your method for heating and combining your ingredients?

If you make creams or lotions that include water, you should add an effective preservative to your formulation.

Finally, read this: http://swiftcraftymonkey.blogspot.com/2 ... otion.html

This blog is a wonderful resource. The author also sells e-books for making lotion and hair products. They are wonderful and the proceeds support youth groups.

Good luck with your next lotion.

Thanks for the replies. I've made other lighter lotions before where I used more water than oil. About 70 percent water. However, this time I was just trying to make a cream which means it should be more like 70% oil and 30% water. But I just wasn't sure how this affects stable emulsion. Is there any ingredient that is effective to take away the grease? Also when I added water to oil, I made sure that they were around the same temperature so that it can be fully emulsified.

I also put the optiphen plus in my lotion as a preservative for about 1%. I just forgot to put this in my previous recipe. Thanks.
