Does anyone know if the castor oil in a local pharmacy is the same we use in soapmaking? The one at the drug store says it's a laxative.

Yes, it's the same. The kind we buy would also work as a laxative, except we're usually not buying food grade in bulk. I've used the drug store brands with no issue.

I just bought some from Walmart's pharmacy department yesterday because I couldn't wait for my shipment to arrive! It's always worked fine for me in a pinch! For some reason this embarrassed my 13 year old daughter. I may have somewhat loudly said "the laxatives" when she asked what I was looking for, but she asked!

I like the drug store castor oil for when I make soap while travelling. In fact, I have kept a couple of bottles to re-fill fro my larger bottle so I'll have just enough when I take a trip. (I clean the bottles between use, so no worries about the bottles contributing to rancidity.)

Castor oil is an old school laxative remedy. Back in the day, my grandmother gave it to all the grandkids for what ailed them! But yes, it is also used for soap making.
