My question is...when you look at the msds for Dove soap...which is the saponifying agent? I see tallow. I tell people that all soap is made with a caustic, but where is it? Am I missing something...? I'm getting so tired of people saying lye soap is dangerous....etc...

Old but interesting....

My guess is that the saponifying agent(s) is/are within the fatty acids used in Dove.

Didn't know Dove had tallow in it. Hmmm...Interesting and good to know. Thanks for posting the link.

If you notice, it says "sodium tallowate" and sodium cocoate, etc. When it says sodium blah blah blah, that is the saponified form of the oil, so they are basically stating the form of the lye and oil together after they have reacted. They don't want to list the lye as a separate ingredient.

That's what I thought, but just wanted to confirm... Thanks!!

I don't think they have to list the lye because once it is saponified it is sodium tallowate , sodium cocoate etc .There is no " lye " left in the soap . I am just doing some gov't "stuff " for my business and from what I can gather you can write it either way , in Canada anyway , not sure about the USA.

they list it that way because they use those ingredients to make the soap. they purchase refined sodium tallowate, etc., and combine them and press it into bars.

I've worked with their soap bases for years.
