Is this DOS? I've never a problem with DOS, so I'm not 100% sure that's what this is... any insight?

I've looked at different threads here and also online, and it seems to look like DOS to me...

Looks a tad like it, but, we need a full recipe with all additives and info on cure rack, cure place, temps where cured (appx), and cure time up until this appeared to fully analyze the issue.

I made some soap that had soybean oil in it (mistake...) and it ended up with spots that looked just like that.

I used 33% coconut, 33% lard, and 34% olive at a 5% super fat. I used coffee instead of water.

All of the oils were bought only a couple weeks before making the soap, so none of them should be rancid. It doesn't really smell like anything. Only the appearance has me questioning DOS.

If you could give us the entire recipe, including all additives, in weights, what your cure rack is made out of, temperatures (approximately) of the curing area, and what it smells like, we can begin to troubleshoot. DOS smells like rancid oils.

That's the recipe I used. I used strong brewed coffee instead of water. There are no other additives. They cure over paper towels on a plastic table (no metal nearby). It's been curing 3-4 weeks. The temp is anywhere from 70-75 degrees. No scent to the spots.

It could be the olive oil. Google soap queen olive oil. You can see a big difference between the different brands. Also somewhere there's a listing of which brands of olive oil have other oils mixed in.

Interesting. I agree, olive oil can often be the culprit. If you bought it at a grocery store, it's hard to know how long it's been sitting there. I had to throw away a batch of bastille soap, and I believe the high olive oil content was the culprit. I got that particular olive oil from a restaurant supply store and it didn't have an expiration date. Even though the oil smelled fine, the soap developed DOS after a 3 month cure. Boo!

PS - my DOS'd Bastile did not smell bad, but the yellow spots were unmistakable and multiplied quite quickly.

I'm not sure. The weird part is, the soap I made before this used the same ingredients, and no spots. I was thinking it could be the coffee, since that's the only thing I changed, but now I'm not sure!

I'm not too sure...it could've been made with tap water--now I can't remember. That could be why! For now, I'll blame it on that. Thank you! I didn't even think about that. It could've easily slipped my mind while making the coffee.
