When I was searching the internet for possible solutions for DOS and how commercial soaps avoid getting any DOS, came across a PDF by Kevin M. Dunn of CavemanChemistry.com , which details testing on different additives to prevent developing DOS in controlled environment. I think Mr.Kevin is the author of the book scientific soapmaking.

Accordingly, the DOS can be very much avoided by using 0.1% sodium citrate & 0.1% BHT (of the oil weight).

Is this a tried and tested method to avoid DOS. I'm worried of soaps developing DOS after being sold. (i've not yet started selling, but want to avoid any such situations)

This has actually been discussed in previous posts here on the forum. I also think DeeAnna has something on her very informative site regarding this if I recall.

I've only had DOS twice, both were in 100% CO soap. The best way to prevent DOS is using good GMP, fresh oils (as fresh as possible), don't use oils prone to DOS, don't store on metal. I also add ROE to all my oils when I open them.

Let me see if I can find some of them. I've read this article and it was informative.

I think I read exact same thread post while looking for solutions. The place where I live, it is impossible to get supplies from soap suppliers, All the oils are store bought. I had DOS once in a soap which contained sunflower oil. I stopped using it after listing to some advise on the forum. Now I use 75: 20 : 5 blend of palm, coconut and castor oils in all the soaps, which works out fine.

However, I tend to have more rancidity on liquid soap, which I use as hand wash. I've seen advises to add preservatives to the LS, however, so far I couldn't find any to purchase locally, apart from adding homemade sodium citrate solution when diluting in distilled & de-ionized water (battery water).

@Lankan, would it cost you too much to have some of your supplies shipped from India? My SO has found some supply shops down south in Tamil Nadu and Bangalore but I haven't asked about shipping. Maybe if you plan to soap lots, and they can ship bulk, it might be worth it? Just a thought..

I've found a place to purchase chemicals, including lye. However I'm finding it difficult to purchase oils and the other additives. Mica's colorants not available at all.

So far i'm working on small scale, my products are for own use and friends and family giveaways. If possible share the Indian contacts (Chennai would be better), so that I can try to get in touch and useful in the future. Thanks again for the offer.
