Hi All,

I'm a new MP soapmaker, and I have a basic question. I'm trying to work on a fragrance blend, and I'd like to avoid making dozens of 2 lb batches to get it right. Can I start with a large batch, using my core fragrances, let it set completly, and then remelt, adding varying amounts of other fragrance oils to small portions of the batch?

In other words, does remelting a soap do any damage to the FO?

Thanks for any help you can provide

Yes, constant remelting will deteriorate most fragrance oils, especially if high temps are used. Why not mix the fragrance blends in large bottles so they're ready to go whenever you need it?

I would not fragrance a base batch that will be heated. It is better to fragrance individual batches.

Yep, like Shawnee said, the fragrances will deteriorate after being heated over and over.
When I'm blending fo's & eo's, I use the q-tip method to find the blend that I like. Just dip a q tip in the fo's I'm testing, take all the dipped q tips & put them in a little zip lock baggie. Just make sure you label the baggie with what fo's or eo's you used. I usually let the blend sit a day or so before sniffing it, to let the scents marinate.

Thanks, everyone. I suspected the FOs would be affected, but wanted to make sure. I've been trying the qtip method, but havent had much luck. I'll just keep making small batches, I guess. Thanks for the input!
